I have recently started exercising to get in shape for my upcoming wedding and to just get healthier in general. My Fiance and I walk 3 miles a day. I want to walk every day, but my Fiance thinks that it is overkill, and we need to take a break some days. What are your thoughts on this? Am I pushing myself too much by walking 3 miles a day (all at once) or is this what it’s going to take to get results?
Ps: I do other exercises on my own, but the walking is just something my Fiance and I do together.

I run about 2-2.5 miles every other day. Sometimes I do my EA Sports Active 2 on my off days.
Personally, I think since you’re walking you’d be fine to do it every day.

I’m currently training for a half marathon, and really trying to lose weight. So I am running about 20-25 miles a week, on top of weight lifting/yoga and sometimes other cardio.
I also live in an urban area and walk everywhere as I don’t have a car.
I would not think that walking three miles a day is overdoing it.

@SuperKate: Yeah, we started off walking because honestly we’ve just been couch potatoes up until now and we’re starting off slow. Fiance just seems to think it’s not slow enough, lol. We eventually will start running.

I only take 1 rest day a week. I run 3x a week (doing C25K) and the other days I either do a class or swim.
As long as you feel up for it I would do it, just don’t push yourself so much that you get injured (although, you’re walking so I can’t really see getting injured that easily).

Jog for 45 min after work Mon-Fri.

You can walk every day as much as you feel comfortable and not overdo it. Walking is really a wonderful exercise, aerobically. You may also want to add some light weight training (you can get hand weights and start small, 3-5 lbs and work up to 8-10lbs each hand) and do a weight training workout every other day. Don’t work out the same muscle groups with weights two consecutive days, either switch it up or make sure to rest a day in between. Good luck with your new fitness routine, keep up the good work!

Walking isn’t really that strenuous so I would think you would be ok without a rest day.
I usually run 35 minutes 1-2x a week and do some kind of circuit training 1-2x a week. if you want to tone up for the wedding I would consider doing something with weights.

@futureMrsMason: I was also a couch potato before I started the Couch to 5k program. It’s a great way to work up to running.
Can you go walking on your own some days? He can do it every other day and you can walk every day.

I don’t think it’s overkill.
A friend of mine did the Couch-to-5k and really liked the training pace. They have a training schedule online if you’re interested in working up from walking to running.

I do 2.5 miles on the elliptical which takes me about 30 minutes (sad I know!) and I also usually walk my dogs another mile or so. 5-6 days a week usually. I think you’d be fine walking.

I do Zumba for WII every day except Saturday and Sunday. I usually take those 2 days for rest and do work around the house.

I don’t think walking that much is overkill, but then again I live in a pretty urban area where walking everywhere is the norm. I generally walk 2.2 miles per day – going from my house to the trian station, and then I hit the gym 4 days a week for classes.
Walking is a great exercise for you! I’ve heard that 10,000 steps a day is ideal for health purposes. Depending on your height/stride that could be anywhere from 5 – 6 miles a day. My sister and I were wearing pedometers for a while in an effort to motivate ourselves to move around more on a daily basis.
I guess it also depends on what kind of results you’re looking for. Are you looking to drop a few pounds or do you want to just be healthier in general?

My Fiance and I go to the gym 4 times a week, we work out for just over an hour. We usually take a nice walk on the weekend.

on a good week, I do some form of structured exercise 5x a week. I either go to the gym and do a cardio class or jump on a machine and do some weights. Other days I might do a Leslie Sansone (Love her new 5 really big miles DVD) which incluces weight training or I will do a pilates video. On the other two days (off days) I will do some ad hoc yoga while watching tv or walk to the park with Darling Husband and just play around. I try to make sure I do something most days.
On an average week, I do form of structed exercise 3x a week (mixture of what is explained above) and my off days I go on a short walk or some yoga. But I usually do something every day.
However, there are some weeks that I dont do any structured exercise, but I still get myself moving everyday. And, keep in mind, my daily commute requires a total of 10-25 minutes of walking each way (depending on the route I take)
