@isabelle_86:  You’d normally feed less than the recommended amounts quoted on the dog food bag but 1 cup per day sounds about right. I’d feed her half a cup twice a day rather than the whole lot in one serving though.

It depends on the food. Different brands suggest different things depending on the makeup of the food.

@isabelle_86:  Our dog is 13 pounds, and we feed her one cup a day, per the veterinarians instructions.

Our dog is 13 pounds and we feed him 1/3 a cup a day.  After some trial and error we found this is the right amount for him.

Except today where he got zero food from us because he figured out he can knock the dog food bag over, get the clip off and go to town.  I caught him yesterday and today with is head in the bag!!

@isabelle_86:  I have an 8 pound maltese and I feed about 2/3 cup a day. 1/3 in the morning and 1/3 at night. He’s not super active but he hasn’t lost or put on any weight in the last year on this schedule so I assume it’s working for him.

Oh my! These amounts sound VERY high to me! For what is worth I am a vet… My 20lb dog gets 1/2 cup a day total. And he is SUPER active : )

I left my 8lb dog eat as much as she wants. She’s pretty normal weight & I’d guess that she probably eats about a cup a day, plus treats. This is Ellie! 🙂

I feed mine 1/4 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup in the evening with a 2cm x 2cm cube of meat mushed in. I’ve been told my dogs are in peak condition and literally couldn’t be in better shape  which made me proud.

I didnt follow the guidelines on the bag though as they suggested double the amount of biscuit and double the amount of meat – I just worked it out based on what their advised weight should be for their breed.

@isabelle_86:  It also depends on how active they are. Active dogs need more food. My JRT is usually around 14lbs and now that he’s 14 and old, if I gave him a full cup he’d look like a sausage.

Also, its really important to not let your dachshund get over weight. They have back problems already and the extra weight is awful for them.

Every food is different based on the amount of calories per cup.  You can use the bag as a guide, but they aren’t always accurate.  Animals also have individual metabolisms and activity levels.  I feed both my cats what the bag recommends for a 4-7 pound cat, and my girl is 7 pounds but my boy is 10 pounds!  My boy is an easy keeper and can gain weight easily if I do not conrtol his food.
