That sounds on the less expensive end. Album cost and quality varies drastically. I would say that 500, including design is a lower end album. Higher end albums start at 800ish and go into the thousands depending on size. And then there is the time the photographer needs to retouch the images and layout the album or pay someone else to do it.
@USER876: Agreed.
I was quoted $500.00 for a really basic album and $1,200.00 or more for a higher end album. I decided to get pictures printed and make an album myself. I purchased albums that I could write beside each picture, so I could tell the story of our day.
The total cost; not including shipping for the albums I made and am making was/is $8.61.
That doesnt sound too bad. Really depends on the brand/quality album that you are getting. In another forum, I saw someone designed her own book and ordered it though blackriverimaging, and I think she paid about $500 also. Not sure how many images it had, but its diy, so you can do whatever you want.
I think we paid around $1200-1500 for our album. Our parents' albums were less expensive.
we're getting two albums as part of our package..but if we were to get additional or separate it out..our photog a la carte cost was $1,000 for a 30-40 page album.
We went with a package that had an album included, but they are $1,700 a la carte. Also, he was running a promotion when we booked him so we get two parent albums for free! (Same as our album, but smaller pages - I think they are usually around $500 each)
Ours quoted us $1200 for the album. We're getting a CD with the rights instead. I would rather save the money, have all our images and make my own albums.
@noritake22:where did you do this through ?!?!? That is an incredible price!
ETA: nevermind, I'm guessing you did like a traditional album? Like sliding the pictures into the holder kind of thing. I'm thinking of doing something through shutterfly or the like.
@USER876: my photog said she makes the album through this site:
does that tell you anything about the quality. have you heard of it?
@hisgoosiegirl: Yes, that is what I did. Both Shutterfly and Snapfish gave me a bunch of free photos and I got the albums on clearance at Joanns. They had been marked down twice from almost $30.00 each, and I got six of them. Each album holds 160 pictures on the inside and there is an optional window on the front cover for another picture or something else.
We printed ours off at Shutterfly. They may not be the highest quality but we are happy with them :)
@PurpleUnicorn: try goggling "visionart album reviews" . I did the same with black river, graphi, queensbury, etc... usually a bunch of photographer forum sites will pop up, so you get a lot of opinons from pro photograhers that have used a bunch of different companies and want to know how they compare to others.
@mwitter80: @USER876: ya, i was gonna say, i don't really know what "midrange" even means! LOL. i guess that is above low range and below high range, but i don;t know what those mean either in terms of quality. i guess i need to see samples.
My photographer charges $1200 and up. I secretly went and got it because my FI was carping on and on about how it's so expensive....even though he agrees with me that it was really nice. I went ahead and paid for it. She takes great pictures and I didn't think my less than stellar DIY skills was going to help matters. To the OP, I think $500 is good.
Our photographer charges $545 for an 8x11 album, but I'm not so sure how many pictures are included - I should look into that!
My photographer's albums are over $1000 so I'd say you're getting a great deal if they are decent quality.
The one I ahve is supposed to be 750, but we paid 250, so you have a good deal.
thanks for posting your prices everyone. its good to know that $500 is considered a "good" price. Of course I told my husband and he thought it was outrageous to pay that for pictures we can print ourselves!!! So for now we decided to wait until after our AHR in august where we will take more pics and see if i can actually save up some money - which won't be happening for sometime!! I do trust my photographer in her taste and style as that is why i went with her to begin with!
I've worked wioth the Vision Art and they are very good albums...depending on the number of pages/sides and size of the album, I'd say you're getting a very fair price. Good, professional quality albums are definitely not cheap...
We paid $3,500 for our photographer and that included:
- Engagement photo session
- Guestbook with Engagement photo pictures
- Wedding Photos
- Wedding Album with about 120 photos.
my photographer charges an arm and a leg. I created my own on adoramapix. its very time consuming but you save hundreds of dollars! Mine turned out amazing!
That price sounds about right. When I first went to meet with a photographer, I was gun ho about getting album thru her and they were fabulous looking. But now having had some months to think about it, I had to honestly ask myself "How many times am I going to lug the album to look at it?" Especially, since I'm more prone to look my computer these days for my pix. So I think I'm also going to the thru Snapfish or other online albums and DIY.
We are paying $1100 for ours. I wish we were quoted at $500 but I must say...It's the only thing you will have (if you didn't getting a videographer) that documents your day fully. Your pictures are great and you are in photo blogs so rock whatever she does...I'm sure it will be amazing :)
I just want to mention that there is an alternative to either buying your photographer's expensive package or trying to design and order your album yourself on a commercial site like Shutterfly or Adorama.
Using a graphic designer to design and order your album costs hundreds of dollars less than what photographers charge for the very same thing. And it's only a little more $ than trying to do it yourself (DIY).
Graphic designers order albums from the same sources photographers do, without the mark up. And it's worth it. First, you get a professional design. And second, the quality of the professional albums is so much better than you get from commercial sites, like Shutterfly or Adorama.
For example, a professionally designed 12 by 12 30-page flush mount album would only be around $600. And the same size premium photobook with thick lay flat pages would by only $300.
As a graphic designer myself, specializing in wedding album design, I'm very familiar with all the print-to-bind companies out there. The ones I like the best are: Black River Imaging, Zookbinders, NationsPhotoLab, and Bay Photo. The quality is amazing and the turn-around is super fast.
Oh, when you choose a graphic designer, be sure he or she is patient, flexible, and willing to make all your changes at no extra charge. You also want to find someone who can photoshop your pics as needed, at no extra charge. Finally, review his or her portfolio to be sure her design taste matches yours. Hope this helps! @Susan Gallagher: How can a graphic designer make money if they aren't marking the books up? I don't understand why you would do that.
@kate169: I would ignore the post above, poster is plugging their own business.....and I expect it to be deleted soon.

my photographer charges $500 to put together a professional album of 70 - 80 of my favorite images.
Is that normal?
what prices have you been quoted or paid?
