Apologies if this has been asked a million times. I have only been to one baby shower, so I'm kind of clueless. So, what do you all typically spend on a baby shower gift (for a friend)?

It depends on who it’s for. If it’s a close friend or family member, normally atleast $100+ (closer to $200 in some cases). If it’s more of an aquaintence or someone who I’m not particularly close with then $50ish.

Just spend what you can afford. A gift's a gift regardless of how much was spent on it.

It depends.  If it's a close friend, then I usually get them something off their registry or something I know they really want (usually in the $100 range).  If it's not a close friend or I can't afford it - it's usually in the $20-30 range.

Like the PPs said, it really depends on the person.  I voted $26-$50 because most of the baby showers I've attended so far have been for people I'm not actually related to or friends with (ex. co-workers, cousin of FI, or baby mama of another cousin).

Around $100 most of the time. Sometimes more.

I usually spend between $75-100. But if it's a close friend, sky's the limit.

$50 for a typical person, $100 min for a closer friend and siblings closer to $200.

It depends.  A friend from high school who I haven't seen in years invited me to her shower, which I couldn't make it to (I live 500 miles away), so I sent a gift that ended up being around $50.  My closest friend from growing up is expecting now, and I'll probably spend a couple hundred on her child.

I'm kinda surprised by the answers, they don't really coordinate with the poll and it's WAY more than most people spend at bridal shower! Based on polls on here at least.

@regberadaisy:  I voted other, (even though I listed a denomination of 75-100 for non-close friends)...because most of the baby showers I go to are for people I am close with. Plus, I love babies so much and love buying baby stuff so I just spend until I break the bank!

Depends on the person. I think we will have to pay a good amount for a sister in law coming up soon! But it all depends on the gift too, I would rather pay for quality and for something she may actually find useful for the baby

Thanks everyone for answering... this is helping!

@regberadaisy: Yeah, I'm surprised, too, it's more $$ than I thought it would be. I usually spend about $150 on wedding gifts, but I figured baby shower gifts would be a lot less. Not that it's all about the price, of course, but...I just want to be in the right ballpark! :)

For me, it depends on how close the person is to me, and what I can afford. I don't think there's a 'wrong' answer to this question tho. Even if you got them 1 thing off of their registry like a box of pampers, they'll be greatful..

    Normally I spend $75

But if the couple is super poor or my sister/bff, more like $150.

I spend identical to what I spend at a bridal shower. Some people are just cheap though... I went to a bridal shower for DH's cousin and everyone else gave like $20 and I looked rude with my $75 gift which was a lot more than anyone else spent...

$75-100, I usually start off wanting to spend $50-60, then nothing cute adds up to that much so I go over a little, then I can't resist buying a cute bag/card/tissue paper for like $15, then I remember I was supposed to buy a book the night before the shower and spend another $10-20

Depends who its for. I usually go with something practical around the 40 dollar range unless I'm really close with the mom to be.

    AGree it depends.

I went to one through work where I didn't even know the girl's name until I got the shower invite.  I spent $25.  I was a bit shocked that people were getting her expensive gifts, but looks like that's the norm.

    My cousin: $75

usually 50.  100 on a close friend and for my sister probably more like 250 (though I can't recall since her shower was over 3 years ago)

Usually around $50, but has been as much as $100 for a friend. I haven't had a family member have a baby in years, so I am not sure how much I would spend!

I have 2 rules, at least $30 and off the registry. I haven't had anyone I'm super close to have a baby though, and if I did I would definitely spend around $100 or more.

I ususally spend about $50 for a baby shower if it's "just a friend". But my sister, I spent about $150-$200 plus paid for/hosted the shower. So if it's family/super close friend, I'm definitely spending more- like buying a big item. I bought my sister her carseat.

I guess I do spend more at a baby shower than a wedding, but usually just because I get invited to SO MANY weddings so I typically spend about $50, unless it's family.

PS I had started a poll like this 5 months ago, so if you want to see more comments on it here it is: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/how-much-do-you-typically-spend-on-a-baby-shower-gift

almost always $30, unless it is one of my closest friends.

we are a part of a huge church and I have a huge family. I am constantly going to showers and would never be able to afford more than $25-$30 gifts.

It honestly depends.  I've only been to two baby showers as an "adult."  The first was a coworker and I spent around $50.  The second (and most recent) was for FBIL and his girlfriend last year.  I spent around $200 on that baby.  I'm known as "Aunt Katy" and since my sisters don't have kids yet, he's the only neice/nephew I have to spoil at the moment!

My MOH and best friend of 23 years (so far) is due on 6/28 - I don't even want to imagine how much I'm going to spend then!!
