Does anyone keep track of this? I always thought my total was really small since I rarely shop, or at least I can't ever find anything in my size. And when I do shop, I only buy things on sale. I just tallied up how much I've spent in the past few months and I was FLOORED!
How about everyone else? Do you keep track or do you have a clear idea? Anyone like me think it was a lot less than it turned out to be?
I haven't been shopping for clothes in forever. When I was single and living downtown, there was a store I loved downtown. I would probably go there once or twice a month and drop 100-150 dollars each time.
Lately, I have been buying when specific items get too big for me, but can't afford a whole wardrobe overhaul.
When I get closer to my goal weight, I am going to put aside about 500 bucks & go shopping at Marshall's and TJMaxx & load up!
@Ella1978:I need to be more like you. I think it's better overall to buy items slowly and spread out, that way you never have a wardrobe full of 'old' clothes. That's a good way to go!
Don't.even.know. And I'm not sure I want to know! Lol. It can't be pretty. Shopping is my only vice. I've been broke so that has effected it. And I've been trying to avoid it as I want to save for a house but it has been a struggle! I think, if I had to guess, I spend about $2,000 annually. Is that bad?
@jennifer_espos:That's not bad at all!! Depending on what you do for a living, it could be a lot more! I work in a formal office environment and wear suits about 2 times/week, other days business casual. So in order to maintain that alone I think I spend around $2K/year.
I shop a LOT. I shop only at cheap stores, but it adds up.
I just looked at my CC and debit card transactions for the year so far. I've spent on average of $450 a month on clothes, shoes and bags, which adds up to over $5k a year. Holy shit.
That's a lot of trips to Forever 21, H&M, and Urban Outfitters.
@danadelphia:We are totally in the same boat! I only buy things on sale but it really adds up! I haven't done my total yet, I don't really want to know..
@moderndaisy- see, I do work in a formal setting, a court house. But I'm usually aware of when I'll have to be in court, which isn't all that often. I have so many coordinating suit pieces that I just mix and match, I tend to not have to buy too many work pieces, I just wear a lot of the same stuff. My problem really is that whenever I go out, even if just to dinner, I feel like I have to have a new shirt/shoes/jewery... its sick! But like I said, being broke helps curb that habit! Lol.
I couldn't begin to tell you since I'm always randomly in need of some retail therapy.
i have no idea.
but im of the mentality that if i only buy things on sale, i saved money.
me: look honey, i bought 2 pairs of flip flops, 2 t shirts, and 3 dresses from j crew/banana/madewell today!
him: how much did you spend?
me: not much..it was all on sale so really, i SAVED money..
**please do not point out flaws with my logic. i will not listen.
Omg...way too much.
Here's my thing: I work for a big corporation and wear "Business Professional" attire every day. So...I have a high need for appropriate clothing. That is where the majority of my shopping $$ goes...
Casual/going out clothes are sadly secondary.
We bought a house two years ago and I stopped shopping for awhile. I went a whole year buying only 2 pairs of jeans, a sweater and two t-shirts for under $200! But I just got a job that pays much better so I went on a little spree. On average I probably spend between $800 - $1,500 a year on clothing. Based on the 2 years I've lived with my FH... he probably spends twice as much as I do!
This was really an eye-opener. Wow.
The good news is that if I curb my spending (not stop it completely, but cut down immensely) I might be able to save an additional $4k or so before the wedding. And we desperately need it.
I don't even want to know. I shop a lot. I LOVE fashion. However, I'm an excellent bargain hunter. I can pretty much outshop anyone in terms of getting amazing deals on high end, designer quality clothes.
I know it's going to be hard to cut back when we really start saving for kids in the future. le sigh.
on average, let's say $100/month = $1200 a year.
that's not detailed accurate, cuz we didn't shop AT ALL the latter half of 2009... but then in recent months have shopped a couple times a month... so i figure it balances out somehwere in between
I used to be a HUGE spender/shopper, but then we bought a house two years ago and in the months leading up to that I put myself on a strict spending diet. Since then, I've had a hard time buying things just because...I now need to need something in order to buy it.
Now, that's not to say that I'm a total saint! I just don't shop for the sake of shopping. My mum and I take two shopping trips per year and that's when I buy all the wardrobe basics that I really need. I spend about $750-$1000 per trip. Outside of those trips, I don't shop very much (this year doesn't count though, as I'm having to buy so much wedding stuff - I'm sure all the Bees can relate!).
I also try to buy really high quality pieces that I know I'll be able to wear for a number of years...I don't mind spending a lot of money on classic pieces as I know I will get so much use out of them.
I kept track once, and it was averaging like $400 a MONTH. Whoops. Most of my clothes are vintage, therefore one of a kind and special, and I don't mind paying a little more for them.
I'm very frugal in other ways, though. I do my own nails and toenails, never had a massage or facial, rarely get my hair cut, I drive a beater that's long paid off, and I bring my coffee and lunch to work every day instead of going out. Clothes are important to me.
@PrairieGirl:OMG, My DH spends more than I do too!! I was kind of shocked. I guess mens clothes are more expensive though..
@Meowkers:I thought I had been 'cutting back' but I was totally wrong. I don't know the meaning of cutting back!! **(On clothes)
@Chillmer:I cut back in the same ways you do. I never have polish on my nails, hair is cut twice a year, eat breakfast (including coffee) at home and bring my lunch. We've also stopped going out to eat unless it's with friends or a special occasion.
I have an addiction to shoes and designer jeans. Good thing I get 40% off of both. I think it varies by year last year I probably spent like 2k or probably less. This year we're looking at probably 3-4k (Just in wedding related events dresses not including wedding dress its about 500). Seriously though...thinking about how much you spend on clothes is scary.
About $100/month when broken down, but I go months without buying anything at all, and then spend a couple hundred in one month.
When I worked at a shoe store I spent more, because we had to be "fashion forward" and I actually got a talking to for not "taking it up a notch" - it was the only time in my life when I really didn't want to shop just because I felt like they were so hypercritical!
I would say $2-3k per year, probably a little more last year because I bought a few suits for work. I really like clothes, and I try to be frugal in other areas so I can splurge here.
Around $500 a year maybe? I hate shopping.
Which makes it even crazier that I tried on 100+ wedding dresses, bought three, and spent close to $10K total. That's more than my whole adult life of clothing shopping combined!
Oh man...I don't even want to know! I know I've spent at least 2k already this year. Early in the year I went shopping with a friend to spice up my wardrobe and spent 700 bucks. I usually buy at least 6 new pair of jeans a year so that's at least 600 bucks. The thing that gets me is I'll go into target and they'll have cute little tees that are 10 bucks or so and I think "wow that's so cheap!" and I'll pick up 3 or 4 in diff colors. And walmart has been the devil lately because they have those really cute danskin workout clothes. I seriously have probably spent 300 bucks on that kind of stuff in the last 2 months. Ugh...And I was planning on going shopping sometime this week. I don't even wanna think about what it would be with everything else included....jewellry, shoes, 2 coach purses a year, skin products, makeup, hair products and appointments, plus getting stuff for FI.
God, I have no idea, but I don't think it can be that much relative to other things. I think it has to be less than my annual spending on cable/internet/cell. If I were looking to cut back there are probably other places I'd look first. Most of the clothes I buy are casual/not pricey (think Gap on sale) and I'm not really wanting the stuff that's less expensive than that.
My MS Money tells me I've had years where I spend as little as 500 during years where I just buy random little shirts here and there, 1 pair of jeans, etc... to as much as 3500 in years where I went nuts on jeans, shoes, everything and splurged on a new louis vuitton.
Also, I'd like to note that since I'm a 'petite' and almost no stores carry my sizes 'in store', I order a lot online and end up returning 1/2 of it. So maybe i actually spend less than what I'm saying..
I really have no idea how much I have spent on myself (clothing/shoe wise) this year. Not a whole lot though, as I cannot even remember the last time I bought something.. Though I do tend to buy specific items, rather than shopping en masse. I would probably hazard a guess around $200.
This is a very scary thought.
I work at a clothing store (part time) & all the money I make just gets put as store credit so I spend approx $3,000 there a year + all the other shopping I do. (Online & retail) And believe me just because I work at a store doesn't mean I slow down the shopping at other store. I am thinking somewhere between $5,000 & $7,500 a year. It's ridiculous I know........
Thankfully our lifestyle allows us to afford it & we aren't in debt due to our shopping! Pay everything with cash (or store credit I guess) :) Actually the only debt we have is a mortgage & I consider that good debt.
I keep checking back here to see if ANYONE spends more than I do. Chillmer comes close. But I keep hoping that someone will spend more than me and make me feel better about myself.
Ah, as I was typing that, Miss Jay bested me!
You bring up a good point, too. I buy NOTHING on credit. If I can't pay cash, I'm not buying it. I also get a lot of clothes for free from sample sale sites (Rue La La, Gilt, etc.) because I get a lot of referral credits from my blog.
I love Ruelala too!! Although they don't ship to Canada. I still go on there daily tho & check out all the great sales!
To be honest I think I'm too scared to calculate how much I spend on clothes. But I haven't shopped in the longest time because all expenses were towards the wedding. And I have to point out that the DH spends more money on clothes than I do! Haha, he's so metro!
I really dont even want to think about it. But I will say this I work a 2nd job (1 day a week) for shopping. I bring home about $85 from that a week and dont save it and it doesnt go towards bills
I am a big shopper as far as clothing and makeup products go. I would say on average I spend about 100 per month, some months more and some months less. In september i usually splurge about 500-600 on fall clothing and the same in March for spring/summer clothing.
I have to wear a suit to work everyday, and women suits are EXPENSIVE and really difficult to find! And unlike my male counterparts, I just can't have a black and navy suit with rotating shirts and ties (if I wore ties).
Now that i'll be going overseas, I'm on a shopping spree for "less then ideal working conditions clothing" :)
I've also fallen into the bad habit lately of getting a new outfit for every occasion we have instead of using items already in my closet.
I've never kept track, but I would imagine that I spend about $2-3,000 per year (excluding my wedding dress!!).
I don't keep track either. I shop the sale rack all the time too, unless I have to have it. But I try to rarely go. We are trying to save up money to move far far away so I have to be careful to watch what I spend.
I haven't kept track, but I honestly have no way of knowing. I have a TON of clothes (literally, probably lol) but I hardly ever buy anything full price. There are also some months when I don't buy anything, and other months where I buy a ton.
This has made me curious- I want to total it up, but I'm a little afraid of seeing the result! :P
