So the grocery poll got me thinking about another thing i probably spent too much on every month...clothing! shoes, purses, jeans, tops...etc...

Let me know what you girls spend! Does your FI or DH think its too much? Do you talk about it everytime you buy yourself some new stuff?

We are going to be combining our paychecks in 2 weeks since we are getting married and I definately spend more than I should--so im going to be cutting back, but it sucks! :(

I usually don't buy clothing every month, but I spend a couple hundred dollars every six months, almost exclusively on work clothing,

It just depends - some months I spent a lot (like at the beginning of a season) and some months hardly any.  I buy more clothes than my FI (I usually end up buying most of his too).

As a side note, I'm a huge fan of combined accounts for bills, savings, etc, but individual accounts for purchases like these!

I've been buying more clothes/shoes/accessories as we get closer and closer to the wedding.  But, I usually don't spend that much on clothes... I voted $30-$60/month on average.

FI pretty much knows about everything I buy... he knows girls will be girls, haha.  Laughing

@eva- we are just doing one account- everything is going to come from one account-- we dont want to do allowances...if we are going to buy each other gifts we will use our credit cards. Im hoping this will help me cut back...

Right now, not so much.  I have $50 in our budget for it but I don't really even spend that much.  I will probably spend more when I get a job (and need to buy work clothes)!

I spend anywhere from $150-300 a month on clothing.  If not more.  But I also work 3 jobs in order to achieve this lifestyle & one of these jobs is at a clothing store where I get a discount.

One day I want to actually buy a piece of clothing and not have a specific need to buy it.  Right now all of my clothing purchases are reactionary, money is tight and I just can't justify buying something unless I have a reason to need it.

For example this week I had a job interview, and needed a new pair of khaki's for it since my old pair is uncomfortable (can't bear to get into a workout routine again after all the stress of staying fit for the wedding).  I wore a shirt that I bought for our e-pics with my new pants.  I hope this job comes through because then we will be on our way to buying things for fun!!

It really just depends. Last month I spent about $400 on new clothes (a couple tops, a pair of shorts, jacket). But before that I hadn't bought anything new for 3.5 months. I also tend to buy more in the summer because that is when my paycheck is higher.

I guess it averages out to about $100 a month?

We are not purchasing anything extra that is not wedding related right now, so I currently do not have a clothing budget.

I usually spend around $150-$200 per month but now that the wedding is closer I'm forcing myself not to buy anything non-wedding related...it's getting difficult as summer approaches!

I'm probably over $200...I won't say exactly how much cuz then you'll all think I'm bananas. It's mostly because I'm purse and shoe obsessed!! Like for real. But while planning the wedding, I have limited myself and I'm proud of that.

It really depends.  Some months I won't purchase anything, but other months I may spend a lot.  It probably averages out to well over $200 a month.  Unfortunately right now I've been spending a lot right before the wedding, because I've been buying new summer clothes, rehearsal dinner attire, honeymoon clothes, etc.

I don't really discuss all my purchases with my FI, although I may mention some things in passing.  FI knows I'm responsible with money, and if I drop $800 on a purse, he knows that I felt like it was warranted and that I could afford it, and that I will probably cut back on other things that month since I spent so much on one item.

It will be the same way when we combine our finances...I don't expect him to monitor or question my purchases, and I certainly won't do it to him.  Thankfully I feel like we are both very financially responsible and are on the same page in terms of money.

Nothing. Nada, zippo, $0. The last time I did buy clothes was a few months ago when we finalized our honeymoon plans (a box full of cheap-o summer clothing at Forever 21). The time before that was last year when I went home and stocked up at Ross! I'm seriously cheapo. But when I do like something, I like it, though I don't really like shopping so the temptation is never there. When I do buy stuff, I prefer the EZ online method. I'd rather spend money on computer related stuff, then I wouldn't even bat an eyelash. But even that has taken in the back burner.

What I do wanna spend money on is furniture for our new home. I'm looking for deals and DIYing but I expect for us to shell out some money for a new couch and other necessities.

We're keeping our wedding private and I'm looking into converting some of the money we would have spent for a formal reception into furniture. Technically, I don't have a clothing budget, I'd just rather spend that money on something else. And so far, I haven't spent anything.

    thanks for your input ladies!

i thought i was abnormal spending about 100-150 per month but now i see i am not! However, i am going to keep it under 100 once we combine finances as we are trying to save after the wedding!

I voted $0-$30.  I hardly buy clothes, shoes, etc.  I'm just not into shopping.  And most times when I do shop, it's because I absolutely have to.

I'm about $100-250 a month, given on my mood.  Its wayyyy down from right before the recession though and before our wedding.  I think I did a bunch of nervous dress shopping right two weeks before the wedding and bought about $800 worth of crap.  Half of those clothes are still sitting with the price tags in my closet.

With the wedding and the new house I don't buy new clothes unless needed such as an outfit for a particular event. I budgeted $1,200 per year to start with for new clothes.

what do your fiances have to say about the amouints you spend on clothes? it seems the average is about 100/month... the thing that sucks for me is that i have expensive taste, so one pair of jeans runs me 100 :(

Our budget was really tight for awhile so clothes just weren't in it.  I think in the last year I bought a few shirts and a dress from Ross (~$50 maybe?) and my mom gifted me with shopping trip for Christmas (2 pairs of trousers, a shirt and clogs for $250).  It's been so long since I've just been able to go shopping I think I've forgotten how.  It'll be nice when we can start again.

Hmm, I'm not sure actually! Our "clothes" money is under our "fun" money budget, and I don't really have a set amount for that. There are some months where I don't buy any clothes or accessories at all, and then one month, I'll go and buy $300-$500 worth of stuff.

I used to be really bad ... probably spent at least $200 a month, every month, on clothes. I started donating clothes to the salvation army that still had tags on. For the past two years, I've followed a strict rule that I only buy things if I LOVE it, and will really wear it a lot ... investment pieces. So that usually means dishing out more dough for them. BUT, it's probably saved me a lot of money in the long run because I LOVE the things I buy now, and I never donate any of it :)

I also put a decent amount of money toward tailoring because I often need pants hemmed, and dresses taken in at the waist.

My husband is very nosey when I bring things home.  I haven't in a while except when I scrimp to save them.  For example, I bought a pair of shoes when it was double points day and I had coupons for $30 off saved up.  Or I needed underwear and I bought them on special at VS at 7/$25 and I got a $25 gift card so I was able to buy 6 more for $6.  So 13 pairs of VS underwear under $3 each!

@alisha: the boy and I don't have combined finances at the moment, but we do pay for a lot of things together (I'll buy the groceries for a week, he'll buy us concert tickets, etc.). However as long as all expenses are covered he doesn't care what I spend on clothing :)

I have expensive taste too (my jeans average $100 a pair) but I make sure to budget it all in accordingly. Because I spend so much on one piece of clothing, I buy less of it (which makes sense since $$ usually means better quality and it lasts longer). I don't think he has a right to say how much I spend on clothing as long as all the necessary expenses are covered first.

That being said, I make more than the boy right now because we are both in school so I feel justified in using it however I want. In a couple of months that might all change as he is trying out for a professional baseball team :)

Weeell, I spend nothing on clothes right now.  I bought some honeymoon stuff a couple months ago, that's about it.  I'm soooo broke because of this darn wedding!  However, when I wasn't saving, I probably spent about $200 a month, if not a lil more.  It was bad!  I think this process of saving for the wedding, and the idea that I'd like a house soon has curbed that behavior.

I don't buy clothes, unless necessary (to replace specific items, or for a specific event). It's not a financial thing.. we just prefer to spend money going places and doing things. I'd hate to think that I couldn't go away for the weekend b/c i spent too much money on some dumb outfit or purse, haha. What good is that? I can pull something together enough to look ok and feel good about myself. Occasionally, I'll spend some money on clothes (I spent 95 dollars @ forever21.com the other week buying replacement cardigans, a maxi dress, replacement sandals, some basics like tanks and tees) but it's more seasonal. I do have a need for more work clothes, but I don't really care right now b/c i don't love my job and have enough trouble combing my hair to get ready, let alone put together a bangin' outfit. When i change jobs, i'll probably go shopping. My hubby used to spend more on clothes, but now not so much either. He bought a bunch of  stuff last fall for our wedding/honeymoon, and I am not sure he's purchased anything since except some boxers twice on vacation when he forgot to pack them, haha.

I also have a problem spending money on little things, it give me anxiety. Like, I'll go to a store, pick out a few things, and while waiting in line, analyze my purchase. I don't NEED those things, so i put them back and go home.  I think about how my parents really had to stretch their money and it makes me feel guilty. I don't feel guilty going on trips and things, b/c those are experiences that stay with you in your memories, and are something to be proud of (like, they worked hard to give me a good life where i could experience different things!). But I'd feel like a real jerk showing up in designer jeans to a family event, so i don't even buy the jeans to begin with. My husband is the same way.

On the months off i prob spend 100-300 on clothes shoes

On reno months i prob spend 1k+ at homedepot/ lowes Its really sad all the employees know us :(

I love that my fiance spends a decent chunk of her income on her clothes... it gives me a sense of freedom to do the same for myself ;)   I understand that women's clothing goes way the heck out of fashion so quickly. You guys get hosed in the fashion industry.  A $350 pair of classic mens shoes can still be the height of fashion when I'm 75 years old.  Classic anything for men stays fashionable longer than you can wear the item out.

I write this because I hope she's reading and I'd like to buy some desert boots, please :)

Melissabegins, you and I think alot alike. When I was single, I spent way too much money and then wondered why I did not have any? :) As I have gotten older, I realized not having a new outfit for everything is ok and there is stuff, way too much stuff in my closet I have only wore once. I hardly spend anything right now and it is in my budget but  I hate to use it and would rather save it. Plus we worked our bduget right now for future baby, house decorating and a plan to pay our mortgage off in 10 yrs (we just signed it in Nov). I much rather have my money go towards that stuff, to me that is more fulfulling. But DH forces me to do things for myself now and then like last night, I could not pass up a good sale at Express and another store I love online. I got 7 tops and with tax and shipping only spent $100! Thats a bargain!

I don't buy clothes very often. Especially not randomly. I go to the mall when I NEED something. But i keep money in my checking account to spend however i want. It acrues, and then i buy something larger with it, like a piece of jewelry or some comfy summer sandals. DH doesn't have an opinion on what I spend because it's my personal account. Our bills are paid, we are 100% debt free (save the mortgage, doesn't count), and we have savings. My personal account is not his place to comment on =].

I voted on $0-30 per month. Every single penny I make is for my wedding. I've shopped at the second hand store (yeah I know) and that's it. I bought a couple of skirts... That's it tho.

@alishadhs4, well, currently, i'm the only one working so i drop X amount of money into the joint account to pay all our bills, mortgage, food, etc and the leftover is "my" money. I put about a grand in savings (i came to that number b/c in a year i want to buy a car and i want to have 15K down, so i figured about $1,000 a month will do it) and the rest is my checking--it's like $400/month. I buy wedding presents for friends, bikini waxes, get my hair done with it, etc. It covers my "my necessities" plus a little more.

We're not real scientific to say the least. But the bills get paid, there's savings, then the rest is checking.

i wish i COULD spend $$ on clothing!!! i lost over 30 pounds last year and have kept it off...but sadly - our finances do NOT allow me to buy clothes! :( more it's the fact that it's all being saved for the wedding and also the fact that my promotion got pushed and I won't get it til after the wedding (grr) can't WAIT to go clothes shopping!!!! :)

I go shopping frequently and spend a lot of clothes (I picked one of the upper options). My husband and I each have a "fun money" budget and apparel is where I put mine. We are living within our means and have a budget that allows us to save in other ways so I don't feel guilty.

These days I get a few new things per month but I tend to spend more per item to get the quality and style that I want, especially for pieces I will get a lot of use out of. My closet isn't filled with unworn stuff and I frequently give away items that I don't wear anymore or that don't fit and throw away worn-out stuff. What I lament the most is the sorry state of the discount stores in my area. Half the time I don't even want to go in because they are so disorganized and dirty and the pickings are so slim. Really it's a shame, because I would shop there more if it wasn't such an ordeal.
