If you want you can also comment on where you shop! Id love to know. I have just been really curious as to what the average couple spends? Oh also add how many you are spending for. I'm sure that changes things ALOT! & Add where you are from! Hubbs & I are the only "humans" in the house but we also buy for four pets! :-)
Oh & forgot to add my answer: I voted for 100-300 a month. We spend from 115-175 every two weeks. Around 300 something a month. Sometimes it has been greater, earlier this month we spent 196! But my little sister was staying with us for a week for summer (she is 8) so I did buy extra!
Usually about $150 every 2 weeks, so $300, and i'm buying for 2 adults. If you include cat food into the equation it might be another 20 bucks.
I'm a Canadian, and usually shop at Sobeys or the Superstore :)
We each put $200 into the grocery money mug, then reimburse ourselves for purchases.
Since I started couponing though, we usually have between $50 and $100 leftover each month which we contribute to the foodbank or the local women's shelter.
This is one of those posts (like many!) that will be very different if you are in Cali, middle america, suburbs, city etc. My mom can buy California produce cheaper than I can a lot of the time, but she is in CT!!!
And stupid Cali doesnt allow doubling or more for coupons :(
I guess we're about at about $240 or so per month. That does not include pet food. We usually get that at PetSmart, as the grocery stores don't have the cat food I like to buy.
We spend about $75 a week. But it's an ill spent amount as I'm not much of the meal planning type expect for maybe saturdays and sundays, and we eat out alot during the week. This is totally an area that we could improve upon!
@lefeymw: Yes I forgot to add that, add where you are from because I am sure it has ALOT to do with cost! Thanks for reminding me. :-)
Two of us, we spend about 200-300/mo. at Walmart (blegh). We shop there because we literally save $50/week. We get pet supplies separately because of quality (grocery stores carry crappy pet food).
There's two of us and two cats: I would guess 700/month. We don't really eat out.
We shop at farmers markets (vegetables), local farms (meat/eggs), and a pretty much all organic grocery store in our area.
I live right outside of DC, we shop at Safeway, sometimes Giant and we spend about $75-100 a week. Sometimes we don't spend that much. Our grocery budget for the month is $100/week and we are pretty good about staying under that. The one thing that always gets us is that damn organic milk that costs $6 a gallon. We go through at least 2 gallons a week!
ETA: we also buy dog and cat food which tends to be pricey
Probably right around $75 a week. I've started trying to eat healthier, which is more expensive (fresh fruits and veggies and such). That's not including pet food. We shop at Kroger and Walmart. I tried to get my produce and fresh meat at Walmart but was not impressed with our local Walmart's quality. Plus, we've shopped at Kroger for so long, we're used to all the brands and things they carry there.
We spend at least $100 a week and that's for 2 adults and 2 children (ages 4 and 8).
I live in Chicago so groceries and taxes are more expensive than other places. Also DH and I eat Kosher meats and as organic as possible. I get a few things at Aldi but most of my shopping is done at trader joes, jewel osco and whole foods. So, I mostly buy higher end foods. To me, it is worth spending money on good food. What you put in your body is very important. We dont have a food budget. Plus we only eat out like once a month so all the food we consume is from our groceries. I would say we spend about $400 a month on groceries (DH, me and one fat cat LOL) but DH does our finances so I am not exactly sure but I am the shopper so I would say about $400. I cannot imagine what it will be like with kids.....so expensive
We spend $200/month on the both of us. FI is in the military so that means shopping on base for cheaper and zero taxes.
@bestbuddies: You pay taxes on food? Most states don't tax food. I believe Kansas does, but not sure about others.
My FI and I are about $175 a month, $200 if we bought meat during the month. I use coupons heavily and have a a pretty good size stockpile. But I would definitely say that I'm not an extreme couponer. I don't have stockpiles that take up whole rooms in my house nor can I get $300 groceries for $20.
@lefeymw: Every state is different. In Missouri we pay a reduced tax on food. I'm originally from CT so that was REALLY weird to me when I first moved out here. I was raised to think that essentials (food, clothing) weren't taxed.
We love to cook and entertain so I think we probably spend a lot more on groceries than we should a month, which is probably about $175 ever 2 weeks for just the 2 of us. We also try to stick to buying all our meats at the local butcher, which is actually much much cheaper than the grocery store.
@lefeymw: Yes, Illinois has taxes on food. It sucks. I have a grocery bill in front of me for 80.45 with 2.15 tax..... food only purchased.
we're in nyc and it depends on how much we eat out...last month we spent just under $300 for the 2 of us, but we went out a bit more than usual. the month before it was closer to $450, though we through a party so a lot went towards dinner for about 15 people. this summer we're getting our vegetables from a csa, so our monthly costs will go down because we already paid for it...i guess on average we spend about $350ish.
we shop at fairway usually, or get groceries delivered from fresh direct. i think those are both nyc-area only.
I think my SO and I end up spending around $700 a month for the two of us and our two cats. We could definitely trim it down, but like daniellealys we generally try to eat organic food and fresh veggies. Unfortunately eating healthy means paying through the nose for it. It doesn't help that I'm like a 5 year old and put almost anything that looks interesting to me in the cart. I have so many no-cal flavourings for water... We generally shop at Albertsons, Whole Foods and a local organic market. We also buy certain things in bulk from Costco.
Edit: That includes eating out and we live in Las Vegas.
@Aure: Oh, I see! My answer did not inlcude eating out! Shew, don't get me started! LOL I have no idea how much we spend on eating out & it doesn't help that we live down town where every place to eat at known to man is within walking distance! haha
@Mrs.Estep: Yeah, I had a brain lapse and just totaled the food stuffs. It's probably closer to $500 without the eating out.
@Aure: No biggie! I honestly have no clue how much we spend on eating out & now I am trying to add it up roughly! But I can't. I think starting next month (vacation next week, eeeeeek so we will be eating out more) That I am going to start writing it down & see how much we really do spend in a month on eating out.
I think between $200-300 a month which is waaay too much for the 2 of us since we're in the Pittsburgh, PA area where food is not taxed! We eat a lot of mac n cheese and boxed foods that are on sale because of this.
@Mrs.Estep: Try using Mint! You can pop in all of your accounts and categorize purchases. You can budget and see exactly how much money is going where! It really helps (and it's free)!
@mittens111211: Same here! We eat out a lot due to my crazy athletic and work schedule. We probably only eat at home about 2 nights a week or so.
On the weekends it varies greatly depending on how much we want to stay at home or get out of the house.
We live in Upstate, NY and I always shop at Price Chopper (it’s less than a mile from our house). This grocery store chain has been running a gas promotion for the last few years where customers get $0.10 off per gallon of gas for every $50 spent. I <3 this. We don’t cash it in until we have over $1 off but sometimes we save it up to over $2. It’s pretty rad when we’re able to fill up our gas tank for $20.
We tend to eat out a lot but when I do a full grocery shop it’s normally approximately $150 per week or $600 per month for just the two of us and the cat. Of course this varies depending on whether I need to buy toiletries or cat food/litter.
@lefeymw: Quite a few states charge taxes on food. We certainly do here in Georgia.
We spend about $450-$550/month. Its the two of us plus a dog. Thats with coupons and shopping the sale ad.
We eat out 2-3 times per month and we eat pretty healthy. Produce is so expensive, it really sucks :(
I live in NYC and estimated about $500-600 a month just now in my head. I definitely spend at least $100/week, just feeding DH and I. If we are having guests over it's extra because I always put out a ton of food.
Groceries are a lot more expensive here, but I don't even shop at specialty fancy grocery stores, I go to the normal ones like Fairway. And I intentionally make inexpensive meals and always use up our leftovers. We also eat breakfast and dinner at home and bring our lunch to work. So I might spend more on groceries, but we save a lot by not eating out.
@PitBulLover: That's alot of milk! Well for me anyways since I dont drink milk :) But I have converted to Almond milk slowly.
We spend between $80-$100 a week, but more if we need paper goods.
You don't have options for $300-400, $600-700, $900-1000, or less than $100 on there.... I would say we spend $300-400 but you didn't give that price range as an option.
We budget for $250 every month. We tend to shop at Superstore and Costco and 90% of the time, plan our shopping trips and meals around items that are on sale in the flyer.
Its just my fiance and I, plus two cats, but we spend 120$ a month.
We live in Oregon and mostly shop at Fred Meyers, but I get all my veggies/eggs/fruit/bread, etc at the local farmers market.
The 120$ includes cat food!
We don't eat out all that much, but my fiance works a swing shift, so I only cook both of us dinner five nights a week.
I'd like to know how much each poster goes out to eat in addition to purchasing groceries. I spend about $400 - $500 monthly for 2 adults and one teen. The teenager eats out with friends quite a bit but we seldomly go out to eat.
@2ndtime: We go out to dinner about once a week (maybe twice if I put off grocery shopping an extra day). I don't eat lunch out at all during the week, but FI does on Fridays.
Me, my husband, and one cat probably use $75/week, so $300 a month or so. We like to balance between eating healthy (fresh produce, cooking mostly at our house) and not having a sky-high grocery bill (organic-only, etc). We live in central Florida. We also host dinner for 5 at our house every other week, so that influences the averages.
ETA: Cooking is one of our major hobbies, so while we probably could trim it down and shop at Walmart or buy less food, we love to cook and experiment and eat different things every night so we are just happy to stay under $100 a week! :)
@2ndtime: We eat out 2 or 3 times a week (lunch or dinner) and have a $300 budget for that so in total, our food budget for the month is $550.
We spend $200-$300/month (usually on the lower end) on groceries for two adults. We get our groceries pretty much on whatever side of town we happen to be on when we decide we need food, so Meijer, Target, Marsh, Kroger, and Whole Foods all get used. Lately it has been mostly Marsh. We also try to go to the farmer's market on Saturdays.
