I have never had any of my jewelry appraised, but have thought about having a few pices looked at. I just bought a ring off of eBay that is supposedly antique, with a natural ruby in the 2 carat range. (The seller has good feedback.)It is yellow gold, and quite pretty. It definitely needs work done on the prongs. If it is real, I got a heck of a deal on it. If not, it is still pretty and worth what I paid for it. (I never pay more than what something is worth to me in the worse case scenario:0) How much should I expect to pay for an appraisal?

@sjhanddab2014: I am going to get my ring appraised for insurance purposes and the place I am taking it is charging me $110.
I dont know if this is a good price or the norm, but thats what I am paying

Wow! It sounds like it varies A LOT. I contacted I GIA certified gemologist/jeweler/appraiser with great reviews in the York, PA area and she said they do verbal appraisals free and written appraisals for insurance, etc. start at 35.00. I just want to find out of the stone is a natural ruby or not. If it is, then I wouldn’t mind paying for a more detailed appraisal. I don’t need to insure glass:-)

When getting my ring appraised for insurance purposes, I was quoted $85 and $100 at two different places.

i think it was $50 to get my ring appraised when we had it done. i know that the cost is different at every store you go to. i also had it cleaned and re-dipped when it was appraised, which brought the cost up to $75 for the appraisal, cleaning, and dip.
