I dunno, but whats your plan? Sounds like lots going on and I want to hear about it :)
ETA: My internet is really slow and I didn't see all your pics. NM!! looks awesome!
I don't know much about this, but I was looking for a very very simple band to go with my E ring and the only way to get something to fit was to be custom.
Turned out that a ring which would essentially look the same as a 200 dollar band with a notch in it was going to cost 800.
For this reason I decided to make my e-ring a right hand ring and choose a wedding ring that is fully worth the 800 dollars (pavve diamonds).
Hm okay i was a little confusing. Originally I priced it out to buy the diamonds from the jeweler and that was like, $2,000. But the setting was kinda tiny for my taste.
So now i'm thinking having them design it but this time, I'll provide ALL the stones.
@Corgi, i came across a 3 stone amethyst ring in yellow gold I don't wear anymore. And I want to turn it into something blingy for my rght hand that I'll actually wear. Without spending too much money cuz DH is unempoyed, but I do have a nice tax return. I'm thinking I'd do this in about 3 months but I hate to make an appointment with a jeweler and go "ok see you in 3-4 months!". I already have someone in mind, too--the guy who appraised our wedding stuff.
On Friday, we met with the jeweler that designed my e-ring. We were shopping for wedding bands, but I wanted to chat about having my grandmother's diamond cluster ring reset (I don't wear gold, its very 70s, but I wanted to keep the diamonds). I decided on a pendant and to have the diamonds reset in 18 carat white gold - will cost $350 (includeds a CAD drawing). I'm selling the gold, which will reduce the out of pocket price I will pay.
Daaang, thanks! That's cheap! I'm hoping it'd be under $500, but I'm also worried it'll be like, $1,000 for the design due to the carat weight.
Oh but it's so pretty. Man, if i can get this ring, total, for under $1,100...that'd be Uh-mAZING!
I wish I knew how to use CAD. A bunch of my coworkers do. That'd be so sweet =]
My e-ring was custom designed and it was only slightly more expensive then if it was just bought as a setting off the shelf. I think it has the most to do with the jeweler, if you find someone (maybe smaller store) that does mostly custom, or makes their own (not just ordering settings from larger companies) they aren't likely to charge you an arm and a leg because it's not really any more work for them - does that make sense?
Yeah, this jeweler ONLY does custom designs for the most part. He has a very small studio, works by appointment only, and my friend has literally had every single thing custom designed, even her solitaire set. I'm really just hoping that if i purchase $500 worth of moissanite stones, I only spend $500 or so more getting it designed and set.
It sounds like part of the reason you aren't wearing the ring is because it is yellow gold. If you are impatient (like me) and want to be able to wear it while you have the other setting designed and made you can heve it rhodium plated. I recently did this with a ring that used to be my grandmothers. It now looks like white gold and it only cost me about $45!
Nah, I wear a spiffy topaz on my right hand and have for a few years. I'd have to get the ring resized and replated to wear it, and the setting just isn't my taste. I'm more of a blingy jewelry kinda girl =]
Can you ask the jewler to break out the price of the stones and that of the setting?
FI and I had my engagement ring custom made and are having my wedding band done custom as well. We first picked the stones which were X amount and then we decided on the setting and he gave us a price of whether we used white gold or platinum.
@roxy, Yeah, i'm going to ask him what the cost would be to design and make the setting (and set all the stones, which is looking to be like, um, 70 in the pave bezel style) if I provide all the stones. Just wondering what kind of range everyone's experienced.
Just an idea, my setting in platinum was $1500 and in white gold it would have been $800. We asked for a breakdown so we could know the difference. However platinum has gone up a lot since then. The jewler didn't charge us for the CAD, just the stones and setting.
I think I'll only be asking for the CAD design, the metal for the setting, and for him to set the stones.
If this helps you--my custom ring cost just over $1K last year. It has 12 or 13 grams of gold and is a simple channel setting (custom designed) for a 2 carat stone (stone not included in the price). I looked up the price of raw gold last year, subtracted that out, and it looks like the design/fabrication cost about $830. The hubby's ring was a cast band (designed in wax, then cast)...using the same formula, it looks like the labor for that was about 685.
the time and gold is what they charge for, gold is over $900 an oz and the time, they prob charge like $500-3000 for the labor and time.

So, i haven't worked with a private jeweler yet, but I know some of you have, so I'm hoping I can get a price estimate without having to make an appointment and meet with someone yet.
I priced out the following setting for 3 amethysts I want to reset. I was told it'd be about $2,000.
Then, i started thinking...since I'm already providing the 3 amethysts, what if I provide moissanite stones for the setting? Surely it's cheaper than diamonds.
The total carat weight would be around 1.75 carats, which is way bigger than the jeweler's ring would be. I saw some of the settings in store and they just were kinda small and dainty for a right hand ring.
So, if I provide ALL the stones and already know exactly what I want (minus the baguettes--i want a split shank), does anybody have an idea of what it may cost-ish to have this designed and set by a jeweler? Thanks!
