We are thinking of hiring a family friend (in her teens) to provide child care during our reception, 6 hours of babysitting for maybe 3-4 kiddos tops, between the ages of 1 and 6.
Any idea what would be a fair price for this? Our potential babysitter is awesome, has plenty of experience, and we want to compensate her well for her time.
I’m sure child care fees vary from region to region… so to narrow it down, we will be in a major city on the East Coast, not quite as pricey as New York but definitely not a cheap place to live 🙂

@kestane: I would say about $100 would be fair, depending on what time the wedding is. If the children will be awake the whole time and she will be entertaining and caring for them the whole time then maybe slightly more. I say this based on about $15 an hour for 4 kids which would be $90 and rounded up.

@carolinabelle: Thanks for the info- it would be between 5-11 pm so I imagine there would be some entertaining/feeding for all the kids and diapering involved for the littlest one… but I also expect some of the parent would pick them up earlier, but we wanted to “reserve” all 6 hours just in case 🙂

I would do at least $20 an hour. She’s going to be traveling to your wedding location and staying potentially staying overnight. So adding a bit more compensates for that. Also, in Boston, $15 an hour for one child with an experienced babysitter is pretty normal.
You could also do something like $100 in cash and a $50 gift card if you’d prefer that. Just as an extra thank you.

@Schatzie821: Thanks, since we don’t have kids I had no idea what the hourly rate for babysitters is these days! I think where we will be is pretty similar to Boston’s cost of living, so that’s a helpful comparison.
