I'm sorry your supply never recovered. :( I know you were working really hard at it, and I hope you feel good about how long you DID breastfeed/pump for.
Let's see, I believe the 2.5 times weight is about right, but that's over the course of 24 hours. You'll also reduce the amount of formula depending on how much solids he's eating, so he won't actually need 50 oz a day.
I would start out with maybe five 5 oz bottles, and see how much he actually takes during daycare. You could also make sure to feed him in the morning before taking him to daycare, but my guess is that the 25 oz of formula plus solids would be enough to get him through the first day. Then, you can adjust the next day's amount depending on how much he actually ate.
DS is mainly formula fed at daycare, is almost 8 months old, is 19 lbs, and eats probably 16 oz. of formula at daycare from 8:30- 5:30 PM. He does also eat a fair bit of solids, but we've been trying to increase his liquid intake (formula or pumped milk) and he wants nothing to do with it... we send him to daycare with bigger bottles, and he comes back with untouched ones.
Oh well. We talked to our nurse practitioner about it, and she says that since his weight is ok, she's not worried.
This is the information we use:

I had to start supplementing at 8 months too due to supply issues. My son is still drinking 5oz bottles of formula, same as he did of breastmilk. Occaisionally he seems to want more so I make a few more ounces and he'll drink one or two more. I'd just play it by ear until you get a feel for how much is right.

I posted here about my supply issues and supplementing with formula.
This weekend I nursed as much as possible, drank mothers milk tea, took fenugreek, ate oatmeal and pumped to no avail.
Today was the first day I dropped DS off with just formula at day care. :-( So we are at the point where formula is going to make up most of his diet. So far, as we've just been supplementing, I've been replacing the breast milk oz for oz with formula, but now that he's taking mostly formula I'm not sure if he's getting enough. I saw online that they advised to multiply the baby's weight by 2.5 to get the # of ounces he needs. He is 8 months and weighs 22 pounds! That's aout 50 ounces of formula, a little less than doule what he drank in breast milk! He does eat some solids, but not much yet. Maybe three 4oz jars of purees a day. He still is working on the pincer grasp and still has some tongue thrusting action going on when he gets cheerios, cooked peas, and the like.
Any ideas how much formula to give him? I was thinking about starting to make his bottles 5 ounces while he's at daycare, then maybe going to 6 ounces?
