I’m just wondering about cutting out things like caffeine, alcohol, fish, over the counter meds, even excersize – things like that – while ttc? And do you think it helps?
I’ve basically all but quit smoking (still have one or two once and a while -haven’t had one now in a month), but it’s really hard for me to cut out caffeine – I love my coffee. I am taking prenatal vitamins already.
It’s only our first cycle, but I really want to get pregnant soon, so I’ll do anything to increase the chances.
What are your ttc habits?

Don’t cut all fish! Fish is very good for both mothers and their developing babies, you SHOOULD eat fish while pregnant. Just cut out high-mercury fish. http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/fishmercury.htm
And don’t cut out exercise! It’s very healthy for both you and the baby for you to get some exercise while pregnant. You don’t want to be running marathons or anything extreme, but walking, jogging, yoga, biking, swimming, etc., are great exercise!
Before TTC, I started cutting back my caffeine so I wouldn’t have to go cold-turkey and get withdrawl headaches. I cut back to 1 cup a day, then started alternating days with regular and decaf, then went to decaf-only when I got BFP.
I didn’t cut out alcohol while TTC. I didn’t get smashed or anything during the TWW, but I still enjoyed a glass or two of wine several times a week up until BFP. Alcohol isn’t crossing the placenta until around 6 weeks.
Here’s what I DID do while TTC:
- Eat well, include plenty of protein & fat in my diet
- Full-fat dairy (increases fertility) every day
- Tried to walk ~30 minutes every day on my lunch break
- Supplements: Prenatal Vitamin, Fish Oil DHA, Vitamin D (4000 IU), Royal Jelly

I don’t think I actually eliminated anything while TTC, but I did start my prenatals and I reduced caffeine & alcohol. I even had a beer or so during my TWW, but never to the point of being tipsy. I have a fancy schmancy Keurig so I have decaf every morning now, so I still get my coffee fix without the caffeine 🙂
Pretty much everything @abbyful: said.

Yup, pretty much what abbyful said. I’ve cut back my caffeine so I won’t have withdrawal headaches once I get pregnant and want to cut it way way back, but I still have a cup a day. I’ve also read mixed things about ibuprofen in the TWW so I’m cutting that and will only take Tylenol (not too big of a deal to switch). And I won’t go in a hot tub in the TWW, but I still take hot showers and stuff. Other than that I am focusing on eating healthfully and I do try to get a serving a full fat dairy a day (mostly yogurt).

You don’t wan to cut out too much or drastically change because that could in turn stress you out or make you more anxious, which actually has adverse effects on your fertility.

I’ve cut out processed sugars, simple carbs, and gluten.

I figure I will have to cut out enough when I’m pregnant, that I’m not cutting back on anything now. I am pretty healthy overall, so I figure my daily cup of coffee, and wine on the weekends, won’t hurt so much and keeps me happy. 🙂

@Sunshine09: abbyful mostly covered it, but I want to add that you can have 200 mg of cafferine while pregnant, so there’s no need to cut that.
The big thing is to stop smoking. The rest of it can wait until your pregrnant and some of those things you shouldn’t cut at all, especially exercise.
