It depends on how large and heavy the STD is.  I recommend taking it to your local post office and have them weigh it.  They can tell you best!  Good luck!

I sent (1) invite to Germany and (1) to Senegal and they each cost 98 cents. I believe the post office worker said there is only Canadian and International postage so 98 cents should cover it. If it’s very heavy/unique size that may be a different case.

Qucik summary: Post card to Japan = $0.98. Letter to Japan = $0.98

Here is a link to the price group for the USPS:

(Japan is in Country Group 3, so the prices under that are what you are concerned with):

http://www.usps.com/prices/first-class-mail-international-prices.htm The price increases with each ounce of weight.

Also, if the envelope is square, thicker than what is acceptable, etc, extra postage will be applied on top of the price ($0.20 for each factor that makes it non-machinable).  Also, you can either place “Air Mail” stickers on the envelope yourself, or the post office will stamp the envelope with an Air Mail stamp (which I think looks cool!).

Also, it’s important to address it properly.  The country where you’re sending it should always be in all caps on the last line. (Same for the return address). Here is a helpful website with examples for each country:
