I'm not sure what kind of food you're looking for but this restaurant was featured on Style Network's show "Wedding Altered" as a very affordable caterer: http://www.stonefiregrill.com/SF.html
I haven't had any personal experience, but I did check out Jay's catering and they seemed really affordable:

And I love Stonefire Grill! Although, I've only done catering for a dinner for four.
I did tastings with The Spot in Altadena and The Kitchen for Exploring Food in Pasadena. I thought both are excellent but DH liked The Kitchen better so we ended up using them.
Their price is pretty reasonable. They can work with your budget. I HIGHLY recommend The Kitchen. We did not have a DOC but our party manager John Robinson was excellent.
My friend ended up using The Spot for her wedding in which I was her DOC. Their price is slightly lower than The Kitchen and the food is good. But I thought my party manager and wait staff was better than hers.
PM me with your email if you want to see the sample menu and prices from both places.
I gave a few caterers my budget and let them figure out what they could do with it. I'm using http://www.cpcatering.com/ and they were really good about working with my budget, for example 3 hor'd ouvres instead fo five, chicken and pasta buffet, one starch one veggie and salad. Ours came about $40 a person too but that includes cake cutting, bar service, decoration for the buffet table and a coffee bar.
Stone Fire grill is great but I'm not sure if they do everything a professional cater would do (serve, clean up, drinks etc)
Where's your venue?

Guys I need your help! I am in search for a really affordable caterer who's food is good. I am debating on this caterer who is charging $40 pp but I want to keep looking around to see if I can find something cheaper. Any ideas? Please list any affordable caterers you know and how much they charge or are charging you. This helps me rule out some easier. Thanks for your help!
