We splurged on the flights, but got a great deal on the hotel. My parents have timeshare in Mayan Palace Resorts, and paid the maintenance fees for us as a gift. We're headed to the Riviera Maya location.
Timeshare is a good thing to look into...a lot of people are trying to sell their weeks lately, since most families are watching their spending and cutting back on travel.
We were going to go to Europe and do the big blow out, but realized that given we're paying for the wedding entirely, the money would be too stressful at this point. Instead, we're going for 2 weeks to CA and spending time in SF, Santa Cruz, and Monterey. AND the kicker? I had enough Starwood points to spend 5 nights downtown in a SF hotel and pay for both of our airfare.
So our plane fare is paid for from the East coast. Our expensive hotel is paid for. We're staying 6 nights in 2 B&Bs which come in under $200/night and have amenities like a jacuzzi and gourmet breakfast. We'll have to rent a car which will be $300 (we're torn about renting a convertible). So there will be like $1600 in hotel/transportation costs, which is quite awesome for 2 weeks. I imagine we'll come in at ~$3000 after food and fun stuff, which is still quite a bargain considering what we're getting!
Miss Pinot Grigio! We are also using my parents timeshare for our 2 weeks in Hawaii!!! so we are saving tons!! Then we also have our flight to Hawaii paid for in 1st class from the east coast since we have airline rewards! But Hawaii is expensive either way, food, touring, sight-seeing, transportation from island to island, etc!
Europe sounds amazing!! It was way out of our budget though to do! You are so lucky!
MegK! You going to check out any of the wine vinards out there? I heard they are amazing!!
We're going to Aruba, and it'll probably end up at about $2,000. We are extremely lucky that my FMIL paid for the hotel and flight, or else we might not have had a honeymoon.
@BeachBrideT: My sister did the exact same thing for her honeymoon in August...Paris for a few days, then off they went to Venice. They had a fabulous time, as one would expect when going to such romantic destinations. =)
@TennisSMLS: Isn't timeshare great!? You can always find good deals on RCI websites.
Hope you girls have wonderful trips!
Aruba is great! You will love it!!! My parents own timeshare there!!
My girlfriend also went there for her honeymoon and she said it couldn't have been better!
were going to Fiji for 2 weeks -and i CANT WAIT! its turning out to be VERY expensive... but when else are you going to splurge on a vacation!?
We'll spend over $10,000 -- but hoping to cash in some frequent flyer miles for first class upgrades to Thailand. FI found an awesome 12 night bed & breakfast tour that covers all kinds of cool activities (and beaches, thank goodness).
We went to the Amalfi Coast & Capri for 2 weeks which cost a lot of money. I would say we didn't have a budget. However, I am so happy we did it, bc there is no way I would ever spend that much on a vacation again and it made the honeymoon seem really once in a lifetime.
We are following in Mrs. Sea Breeze's footsteps and spending a week at the Majestic Colonial in DR - for less than $2200 including airfare!
We decided that we were doing exactly what we want for our honeymoon, no compromises. We're spending $7k + on a 14 day Hawaii excursion! The best hotels, tours, etc. Can't wait!!
believe it or not we won our honeymoon and didnt believe it. I was so excited and knew that we had to see how long we can hold it for lucky the travel agent said we can roll it over for this year!!! But we will be adding some extra days and go travel the West Coast a bit
MegK- where in SF are you staying??? I LOVE the W and Westin there. Love love love. I am thinking about getting a Starwoods card just so I can stay at the W there!
We went to Tahiti! we really wanted something off the beaten track and something that we knew we may never get to do again -- it was PERFECT! my best friend worked for a hotel, so she was able to get us employee rates (WAY WAY WAY Less expensive than the normal prices).. which sealed the deal for us. Airline tickets were pricey -- 4G for both of us...
and unfortunately, tahiti was SUPER expensive. they charge for everything there! so be aware! i did a lot of research before we went, but didn't think it would be that expensive. with all the excursions and food our honeymoon probably topped $5,000. totally worth it though. :)
@Miss Pinot- we're doing Paris, the Venice, Rome and Sorrento! :)
@LM- any advice for the Almafi coast? We are thinking of staying in Sorrento and then doing day trips to Positano and Capri
Miss Burgundy - We're staying at the Westin St. Francis. It looks really awesome and quite centrally located. I travelled every week for business for a while which is how I racked up so many points. I do love the Starwood program.
We're going all out as well, although I think we've been doing a good job of planning, finding deals and using credit card rewards.
Our estimate for our ten day honeymoon to northern Italy is about $4,500
I am really surprised so many people chose $6,000+! I have no clue what to do for a honeymoon but I definitely would love to spend that much.
@ BeachBride: the Amalfi Coast is wonderful (as are the other places you are visiting). We stayed Ravello, Positano, then we went to Capri for a week. Sorrento is a good base to get around for day trips. We didn't stay there- but my wedding planner said it was her favorite!
I think Positano is a great day trip: lunch on the sea, shopping, a bellini at the Sirenuse (for a honeymoon treat).
Capri is also fun, though I am glad we stayed for a while since it is packed with tourists during the day, so a bit slow to get around, also, it could be hard to do everything in one day comfortably- like blue grotto, lunch, funicular, window shopping (getting the famous capri sandals custom made for you), etc. But I saw a lot of people doing just that, so I guess it might be possible or you can choose what is most important for the two of you.
If you have specific questions, please feel free to write me. I'm sure you will have an amazing honeymoon!
I"m going to Italy too! Milan, Venice, Florence, Amalfi, Rome, with day trips to Pisa, Tivoli, Naples/Pompeii. We are splurging but at this point we felt it was once in a lifetime for us. We are looking at over $10K
We're going to an all inclusive resort and got a great deal because the economy is so bad!
My FH and I are very fortunate. Our honeymoon is going to cost between $1,000-$2,000. We are staying at a hotel in Playa del Carmen, Mexico where we were offered a FABULOUS time share to use! All we have to pay for are our flights and food! I am a Mexico lover, I lived there for awhile so I can't think of anywhere more romantic and relaxing after our wedding!
Look into time shares if you are interested in saving money. Especially if you can find an all-inclusive one! Ours is not, but I am still very excited!!!!
britta7707 - I so totally agree with you! When other time are you going to have a purpose to splurdge!
Thats why I was curious and started a poll to see if anyone else agreed!
kenziegirl - I wish we had $10,000 to spend on our honeymoon but it's just not feasible! lol you are soo lucky! Thats is going to be an amazing experience!
LM - Capri must have been interesting! Thats a new one! I haven't heard of anyone going there! ![]()
august15bride - I've been to the DR 5 times! Its a great island! Just be careful when you leave the resort! We always stayed in Puerto Plata but I know a lot of people that go to Santo Domingo! Where are you staying? I def recommend the jeep tours and 4-wheeling tour! They are both a lot of fun!
MightySapphire - We are doing hawaii!! Hopefully not spending $7k cause we just dont have that kind of money, but what were some of your excursions? Did you see my post about Hawaiian advice "Hawaiian Honeymoon!!!"? and "Hawaiian Island Hop"? I could use any advice and help I can get!!
Shay - Where you going on the West Coast?? Thats cool that won it!!
nada122 - I heard Tahiti is amazing! but also like you I heard its wicked expensive!!! I bet you have some great picture though!
angelastheboss- I'm with you there! I thought I'd get a lot of people spending between 2-3K so I was wicked surprised to see people spending more the 6K! They are so lucky to have that kind of money to spend!
lovelerae - What all inclusive resort you doing and where?? All inclusive is the only way to go!!

We are saving a lot of money for our honeymoon because its a once in a lifetime moment. But where do you draw the line? How much are you splurging for it?
