I have no idea when I last pumped and gave my lil man a bottle, so I have no clue how much he eats.  I'm thinking of starting to do this once a day, though, so it will make feeding during outings slightly more convenient since I don't like to nurse in public.  So, how many ounces of milk does your baby drink?

This chart is meant for formula feeding but it will give you some idea of the amount.

Breastfed babies are usually fed more often as breastmilk is so completely digested.

@julies1949: Oh that's a great chart, thank you!

Did other moms notice that is the amount their babies drank?

My guy is a few days shy of 5 months.  He gets expressed milk while I'm at work and typically takes 6.5 - 7 oz a feeding.  Can go up or down a little, but that's his norm.  He was taking 6 oz at his 4 month well visit and the doctor said that amount was about average.  You may want to try a 7 or 8 oz bottle and let him have what he wants til he's full so you'll have a better idea of what he needs.

My baby girl is on formula, and she eats about 4 ounces. She's a month and a half. She's a big baby though, so she eats more than the chart says she should.

At his 4 month well visit, pediatrician told us that DS (who gets pumped breastmilk) SHOULD be eating 6 oz at a sitting, and that sittings shoudl be about every 3 hours.

He never has. If he has his way, he'll graze all day long at daycare- 3 oz here, 2 oz. an hour later... We're trying to only feed him every 2.5 hours, and then he'll often take closer to 5 oz. But pretty much never more than that. He's a little over 5 months old now.

I can't believe I didn't realize he drank that much, especially since he eats so fast.  Guess I better get pumping to give him a practice bottle tomorrow or Saturday and so I can take one on our outting Sunday. :)  Thanks for all the help ladies!

Finn is 5 months old and RARELY takes more than 4 ounces for a feeding.  Usually it's more like 2.5-3.5.  As your baby grows your breastmilk changes, so breastfed babies don't require the volume that formula fed babies do.

At 5 months, DD was drinking 4oz at a time, and took 20oz at daycare per day.  I always had five 20oz bottles pumped for her.  I pumped four bottles per day at work, another right before I went to bed, and caught up with any extra pumping on the weekend.

At 5 months DS was drinking a 4 oz bottle per feeding at daycare.  At that time he would drink three 4oz bottles during the day at school. When nursing, I think he usually only drank about 3 oz or so because if I pumped right after I could usually get about 1 oz more but when he has access to me, he wants to nurse and does so more frequently than he takes a bottle so it makes sense that he will drink less when on the breast than bottle.

At 6 months he started wanting more milk per bottle and now his morning bottle is 6oz and his two afternoon bottles are 5oz each.  I should add that he is no longer gettting to nurse at night when he wakes so that mid-morning bottle at school is helping him catch up since he didn't nurse at night.

Kellymom has a post about how much expressed milk your baby needs.  It may be a better calculator for you than one for formula.

my son is 8 weeks and drinks about 4-5 ounces of breast milk. so just a little less than the formula chart.
