I’m in my third trimester now, and lately I’ve noticed I’ve been having a lot more swelling (edema) than usual. (I’m at 29 weeks.) I work at a job 3 days a week where I’m on my feet for 6-8 hours, and yesterday when I got home my lower legs and feet were really achy and swollen (indented were my socks were by about a centimeter). I took it easy for the rest of the night, and as far as I could tell the swelling was gone by morning. I’ve been careful to not be on my feet as much today, but when I checked at lunch I still have indentations from my socks again and my legs are starting to feel achy.
I know that sudden swelling can be a sign of pre-eclampsia, which is why I’m a little concerned. I have been trying to drink lots of water. I haven’t noticed any swelling elsewhere (hands or face), it’s just my lower legs and feet. My next doctor appt is next tuesday, so I plan to ask about it then, but I was just wondering what experiences you guys have had.

So far, you’re ok. Lower extremity swelling is very common, esp in the last trimester. It is worse the more you’re on your feet. Keep your feet up as much as you can when you’re not working. As for pre ecclampsia/ preg induced hypertension, people usually have swelling in the face and hands, in addition to ankle and feet. Also headaches, blurry or double vision, pain in your upper abdomen. Your doctor can double check all this with you, but what you’re describing is very normal.

LLEU: I had pretty crazy swelling for a few weeks when I was about 32 weeks pregnant. My doctor wasn’t concerned, so I just drank a lot of water, and I also soaked my feet and legs in warm epsom salt water every night, and that all seemed to help. If you like baths, just add a cup or two of epsom salt to your bath water. It should help. If things get really bad you can get compression socks, and that may be something to ask your doctor if you need. Mine was not near bad enough for it.
