Could you give him a really generous gift that he’d like? I don’t mean money because that seems more like payment. What does he like?

That’s very generous of him. I’d probably spend $250/$300 on a gift.

Considering we paid almost $1500. for both of those things almost 4 years ago, I think considering your circumstances, I’d give at least something in the $300. range.

it seems like flight and hotel could add up to a decent amount and would warrant a much more inexpensive gift? Otherwise I could see it easily adding up to $700 plus $300 gift and it’d end up close to the amount you’d pay anyway?

Giving cash would be too similar to getting paid, I suggest a gift as well. In the $300- $400 range, maybe something along the lines of an electronic he could use for his work.

Our DJ was $550 before tip and the officiant cost a “donation” of $150 (on a wedding of $25,000)  So I would recommend a much smaller sum than those above as you’re already at what it’d cost to hire my DJ/officiant!  What does he usually charge?  Maybe do a percent based on that.
