Ater some weird stuff with our baker I ended up asking an old family friend to make our wedding cake. He’s a great guy and does an AMAZING job (he made my parent’s cake). I’m pretty sure he’s not planning to charge us for it though, and there is no way that I’m not going to pay him.
Does anyone know about how much it would cost for him to make a three tier cake, the bottom tier 16″, middle 12″ and top 8″? The icing and fondant will just be white, with a bit of a scroll design also in white on each layer going around it. There will also be fresh berries on top of both the bottom and middle layer. If he doesn’t charge us I’m going to give him a thankyou note with hopefully at least as much money in it as it cost to make.

Think about how many guests the cake will be serving. Most bakers charge by the slice, with prices starting around $3, but more for fondant.

@Tigerlilybride: It depends on what flavors you are going to have and the quality of ingredients that will be used. Fresh berries or complicated flavors should cost more than a simple white or chocolate cake with a frosting filling.
Like the PP said, $3 a slice is about average, which based on how many servings that cake will have it would come out to $552.

If I gave him $500 he would not accept it. I’m more trying to find out how much the materials would cost. I can guess at the cake itself and the berries, but I have no idea for the rest.

Here in the Bay Area California, for a fondant cake i have come across $6-$8 per serving!
So for a cake 16, 12, 8 which serves 181 people, that’d be about $1086-$1448…
I would at least offer him $800

Thats crazy! Around $3 is closer to the norm here. But seriously, these people are very stubborn and anything I give him will have to be in the form of a gift.

For ingredients alone, it’s probably around $100-200 depending on flavors and quality of ingredients.

Thanks! I’ll probably try to give him 200-250 depending on what I think he’ll take. My mom knows him better, I’ll ask her what he would take!
