We are having a DJ do the entire thing from ceremony to reception (but we are outside not in a church) and the reason we chose to do that was because after researching musicians i was being quoted around 400.00 for like 20 minutes so I'd say 350 for an hour is fair! But I'd definitely get more thoughts than just mine on than ;)
We are going to pay about $600 for a 30 minute ceremony and an hour of cocktail music for a string trio. We are in MI, and the cost of living is much lower, so I'd imagine it'd be even more in NJ. We went with highly trained professionals because music is important to us. $350 sounds pretty good to me :)
We hired an acoustic guitar player to play during our 45 minute ceremony and cocktail hour for $600.
Keep in mind that musicians have to rehearse your music, be able to afford proper attire for performances, buy/maintain equipment if needed, travel to the venue ectect, plus they are skilled, so the cost isn't just for the hour they are there. :) 350 divided by 2 for each musician makes $175, which I think is more than reasonable.
It sounds about right to me. I am looking for ceremony musicians in the Chicago area, and a string duo (two violins) is going to run anywhere from $250-$450 for one hour (depending on the level of experience). Then again, that's for violinists, so I'm not sure if an organist/vocalist duo is different!
i live in Los Angeles and paying 700$ for a string trio for an hour and a half sucks its so much money but they are well worth it to me.
AND this is why I love this site. Thank you for your comparatives, and information ladies. it helps a lot! :) I guess we'll call Ava and Ted and tell them they are hired. They really are great people.

Hello Bees!
A quick question... our Catholic Church ceremony does not include ceremony music, but they do recommend a duo (husband and wife) that were the musicians for many masses throughout the years.
They are quoting us $350 for 1 hour full mass. Ava is the wife, she plays the organ, and her husband Ted, he sings all of the hymns.
They know the church, and know the hymns and have done weddings before, but is $350 a normal quote for 1 hour? it seems like a lot to me, but i have never looked for a ceremony musician before!
We're in North NJ! thanks :)
also- Anyone know of any good ceremony musicians in north NJ (or hudson valley NY under $350?)
