I love spa like bedrooms and want our bedroom to feel like that. We are still in the process of decorating but I feel so unmotivated to decorate (curtains, paint on walls, art, etc) beacuse we have a lot of trouble keeping our bedroom neat. I would love to blame it on my husband but really its both of us. I like things to be clean, but I seem to always have clutter around. My dirty clothes always end up on the floor of my closet rather than in the hamper. DH has a habbit of doing a load of laundry and never putting it away (just leaving it lay around until its all dirty).
So, does anyone actually keep up with an awesome looking bedroom?
For fun, here are the pictures I would LOVE to have my room look like:

My bedroom more or less looks like a bomb exploded. It's so sad. At least I can keep the rest of the house pretty clean!
Our room stays pretty clean, but I usually have either a few pairs of shoes scattered by the closet (oops) or there will be laundry falling out of the laundry basket (FI, why is it so hard to get the t-shirt INSIDE the bag instead of flooping over the edge or on the floor nearby?). We both have our faults! However, we're also both pretty good about making the bed, vacuuming regularly, and keeping the dresser & bookshelves tidy, so I'd say we do fairly well. I'm probably worse than he is!
Our house and bedroom appear very tidy and organized, but open the closets and watch out! I think a messy closet is just as bad as a messy room....I feel like FI "forks" piles of his clothes into the closet. It's hidden, but it's still a huge mess! lol.
With two cats, it's nearly impossible to keep a nice house because they are constantly knocking things down, destroying my dresser, etc. We can't even make the bed some days because our fatcat likes to sleep on the messy blankets...and he snarls if we try to move him!
I think once you decorate and it starts to look nice, you are more inspired to keep it clean and looking nice. My hubby put up new blinds in our bedroom, I finally got all our new bed linens assembled and they look so good I've been making the bed every morning! Not something that I've always done, but it just looks so much better made up.
Right now our bedroom is kind of bare because we just moved into a new place about a month ago, and are still in the process of decorating. We are also planning on getting a new bedroom set. I just recently hung some espresso colored curtains (I need dark curtains because I work shift work) and the really add some punch to the room! Overall we try to keep the bedroom neat, but our bad habits include putting clothes on the floor and for my husband, (same as yours, caszos) likes to do laundry, but leave it folded in the basket. He is getting better though!
I find it hard to sleep in a messy room, so that usually motivates me to clean it :)
@JenniB: I agree. We decorated our bedroom in March and ever since we both like to keep it looking nice. (New furniture, painted walls, new linens/curtains)
Well our room is clean if I would actually pick up my clothes off the dresser. DH will leave his clothes on the floor and I will put them into the dirty clothes. Our bed is only made once a week when the sheets get changed... I seriously need to have more time to do this... At least the Kitchen is clean.
Mine is generally clean and well organized, though I never make the bed. I can't STAND clutter on furniture (desks, dressers) or posters on the walls. If you have a well designed room, it will look tidier than a blah room, even if it's not.
OUr room is clean to an extent. Since it's on our top floor (attic converted), no one goes up there and we don't hang out in there except for sleep and playtime
. I try to keep it tidy because clutter makes me go mad.
If our room was where everyone could get a glance in...it would look like the photos above.
I am trying to accept that our bed room will not be neat and organized. I think I am incapable of keeping it completely tidy. Right now I'm changing out seasonal clothes, so it's worse with the huge pile of summer clothes on the floor and the box of winter clothes in the living room. I'm trying to get a better schedule where the more public areas of our house are kept pretty tidy and the mess is just in the bedroom, but right now even that's a struggle. Plus, we have mis-matched hand me down dressers, no bed frame since we got a new cal-king bed, and no end tables. Plus our only lighting is a $6 walmart lamp. Bleh. maybe in a few years we'll have a few bucks to put into our room, but it's just not a priority right now.
Clutter makes me sort of crazy. I love baskets and drawers to hide stuff in.
My bedroom is always super tidy. If hubby leaves in the morning without making the bed, I will come home after work and make it, even though im going to bed in like 4-5 hours.
The only time it gets "messy" is when i need to dust. WE have a cat and it feels like sometimes i cant keep up with dusting!
Our stays somewhat clean other than the fact that I never put shoes away, and my husband throws his clothes EVERYWHERE. I think it's an illness.
Ours is basically clean. Sometimes piles of pre laid out clothes for the upcoming days of work and shoes lined up under the bed. Sometimes my dresser is messy but DH's is always de-cluttered and nice! of course they'res always cat hair Everywhere!
@Mr. Coffee: Too funny, do you have an "after" picture you care to share?
OMG, if I took a picture of my bedroom right now I would be pretty embarassed but unfortunately it has been worse.
Making the bed is a tough one. DH doesn't see the point in making the bed and he's the last one out of the bed so that means its never made. I am slowly convincing him its not so hard to just throw the comforter back on the bed.
My husband is a neat freak, and I am, well, not lol so our bedroom looks on one half (his) all nice and tidy and organized, and one the other half (mine) like a bomb full of clothing went off, everywhere. :-/
But, our bedroom is upstairs where no guests go, so I don’t really care! Heehee!
our bedroom is usually the messiest room in our apartment. we're actually have a bedroom decorating bonanza this weekend so maybe we'll be better about it. our dresser has been slowly been breaking down since we moved here a year ago (it took a couple hard knocks getting here), to the point where we keep more of our clothes on the couch than in the dresser because we're sick of drawers coming apart in our hands. we're picking up a new one and some new matching bedside tables on friday, so i'm very excited - maybe we'll actually start putting our clothes away! we were going to paint this weekend too, but we're going to register for all new linens and then get a new (bigger) bed, so i want to wait until we pick out new linens. i'm so excited for our bedroom makeover, we've completely ignored it up until now.
We're really good about putting clothes away in an already neat closet and make the bed every day. Our bedroom doesn't necessarily look like the magazine photos, only b/c it's a rental so the decor isn't that nice, but we've arranged it so it does look really neat and tidy, no clothes or junk is visible.
I find the state of our room sad. We have a two bedroom house and used the second bedroom as half storage half sleeping for when the kids came over. When the boys moved in with us it was sudden so we just threw all the stuff in our room. Right now it looks like a wedding factory exploded in there. I would kill for some storage right now. After the wedding it should go back to normal. I hope.
You can do it! I used to be a habitual messy-room person. I would stack my clothes so high on the dresser they were taller than me. There were many MANY times when you literally could not see floor. Or dresser. Or end table.
But it all changed when I moved in with FI! We both make an effort to keep it clean and most of the time its what I like to call 10 minute clean. I wouldn't be embarrassed to have anyone see it as is, but it isn't perfectly tidy. Usually the bed isn't made (we don't see the point) and there are a few extra things on the end tables (books, water glasses, receipts). And sometimes there is a basket of laundry to be folded. But at any given point I could make it look really clean in under 10 minutes because its usually just a few little things. It feels SO nice to keep it that way now. My old room depressed me
Any other tips to keep the bedroom clean?
Ok, I'm being brave and posting pictures. This is from my cell phone as I sit in bed right now.
@caszos: Have less stuff in your bedroom. The fewer clothes you have, the less there are to fold/hang, the less likely it is your drawers/closets will overflow, the less likely it is you'll slack on cleaning! The same thing applies to the little clutter stuff. It's a lot easier to decorate after a good purging. :)
Another tip for the laundry: make a rule to fold/organize it before you put it in your bedroom.
I like my room clean. I am an anal neat freak, however I share my room with someone who is compulsively messy, and completely oblivious to the fact that clothes on the floor, and random pocket things all over the dresser make me crazy.
So I voted 'so messy we don't bother decorating" because even if i did, it would end up one giant horrendous mess.
I want my own room :(
I think ours is tidy/neat, but we don't have any space (500 sq feet total condo). We have a walk-in closet so anything we don't have room for in the actual bedroom goes in there.
I can't wait to have a grown up bedroom. Every day, I feel the walls of our condo closing in more and more. But it would be stupid to get a bigger place before FH goes to Afghanistan so I just have to enjoy being close to him I guess.
When I was in grad school I had a big bedroom and a fireplace and all that classic New England stuff. It was neat, clean, and lovely!
@caszos: The "messy" pictures aren't showing, but I LOVE the top green inspiration picture you have. It has such a nice balance of textures and colors -- woods, upholstery, patterns. I am totally stealing that for future reference. I am sure that you can do it! Like others have said, once you get something nice, you're more inclined to take care of it. When FI and I had separate, hand me down beds, we never made them. There was no point -- they would have still looked sloppy! But when we bought a new bed and got a nice matching sheet set/comforter/shams, now we make it every single day. Good luck, and I look forward to your "after" pics!
THe mess in our bedroom is always just clothes - we clean it every other week or so but it is not clean on a regular basis!
Umm... our bedroom is neat, but we never make our bed. Our big throw pillows are usually on top of our dresser. I just can't get the movitivation to put them back every morning.
We aren't finished decorating our bedroom yet, since we want to buy really high-quality furniture, curtains and art, and our priority was on decorating the parts of the house that guests see. Once we do finish decorating it though, I imagine it will look very nice most of the time, since it never gets messy. We really don't use it at all unless we're getting into or out of bed. My husband has his own walk-in closet in our upstairs office, so all his messiness gets centered over there. I'm a tidy person and don't throw clothes on the floor, so the area around my closet in the bedroom is clean, and I usually keep the closet doors closed (with a crack to allow the cat in and out, he loves sleeping in there.)
I usually throw my clothes on the floor when I change into my pj's but they aren't there for long. And unfortunately the counters get dusty within 2 days of dusting it!! We never make our bed unless we have company coming over, but even then, people don't usually come upstairs unless they've never been to our house before. We don't keep our shoes in our bedroom so I don't have issues with that, however, they are spread all over the two entrances to the house!!
We don't live together yet, but our bedrooms kind of look like someone broke in and ransacked the place. I'm kind of terrified of how messy it will be once we do actually have a place together.
@caszos: i can't see your pics... but i think it depends on what your messy "trigger" is. For me it was always clothes. I hated doing laundry so I'd wear everything I owned and let it sit on the floor. Then I'd do like 6 loads of laundry in one day and let all the clean clothes sit in the baskets until i wore them all again. My main reasons for doing this were
1) laundry was always inconvenient.... laundry room or scary basement 2 floors way
2) i literally didn't have enough room to put everything away, even if i tried
3) i'm lazy and I have no motivation to keep a clean room
Moving really solved #1 and 2 because laundry is only 1/2 floor away now and the laundry room is clean... and i actually have enough room in my walk in closet for everything-- yay! #3 is harder but now that i have no other excuses if i let my room get terrible again i'd know it was all on me and my laziness.
Pretty clean...I have a bad habit of draping an article or two of clothing over my bed and sometimes my vanity and not hanging it up for days, but I'm working on it. I like to keep it clutter free but we'll go through phases on making the bed or not. These last few weeks have been a mess!
I actually find that the bedroom is the easiest room to keep tidy. Mostly because we don't bring anything in there that doesn't belong and also because there's a place for everything (i.e. designating a shelf in my closet of clothes to refold/put away eliminated the clothing on the dresser effect).
@BunnyBrideToBe: I'm worse then my BF too!! I always have my pjs and a few things out in the room, and definitely some clothing in my closet that I've tried on and tossed on the side of a laundry basket instead of hanging up but BF's closet is immaculate! He never leaves anything dragging.
The rest of our house is pretty spotless though so I guess it's not so bad.
It goes in cycles, I've been trying to keep up with it but when work/school gets busy my apartment (bedroom) goes down hill to me just throwing my clothes around the room. I have days where I feel huge, and so I want something comfortable to wear so I change several times finding the most comfortable outfit, and then I get lazy and don't put my clothes back on hangers.
We don't have real nightstands yet so the floor or chair by the bed is usually unsightly, library books strewn about. Good thing, I have my clothes in another room or that would likely be another eyesore. Hubby makes the bed and he's good about that so that is usually ok but our pillowcases don't match. We also need a new matching comforter/bedskirt, then our room would look great. It's so hard to spend the money since we are the only ones in there...we splurged on a great plush bed/mattress pad (on sale!) and have no problem closing our eyes on our not-too-charming room when it's lights out.
