I was raised in a household where when you were done with a dish, you washed it right away. DH's parents, however, wash dishes maybe every 2-3 days. I heard that and went, "Ick." We clash on this quite a bit--I am obsessive about getting them done, but he likes to let them pile up for a day or two. But really--how hard is it to just scrub it down with a little soap and warm water? It's not like you have to fill the sink up every time. Eeeeeeeeegad.

So, how often do the dishes get done in your house?

We fill the dishwasher after each use, but run it only when it's full which is like twice a week.

We run the dishwasher every day. I swear every morning starts by me unloading and reloading the dishwasher. I've come to resent it some days ;)

We use a washer and only run it when it's full (1 to 2 times a week).  Sometimes some dishes pile in the sink when we don't have time to empty the cleans.  Personally, I'm more icked out by touching dirty dishes to clean them!

We do them  about every 2 days. Only because we have a dishwasher and we dont use enough dishes in one day to run it without it being wasteful. Once we use a dish it goes into the dishwasher though, it rarely will hang out in the sink unless it needs to soak.

Once a day.  The only meal we really eat at home during the week is dinner, so after I cook dinner, he loads the dishwasher.

We have a dishwasher but its a pain in the ass since it takes like 5 hours to complete a full cycle so I normally just hand wash the dishes. I'm pretty good about getting them done as soon as we're finished using them but this week I've been kind of lazy. We currently have a pretty good size pile accumulating in the sink. Hopefully I find the ambition to deal with them tomorrow.

When I lived in an apartment during undergrad I lived with two other girls. They shared their dishes and I had my own. We each took over one side of the sink. I got obsessive about rinsing mine off so I could just do them once a week so as to not waste water. Now we do have a dishwasher but FH is a little more stringent on what goes in the dishwasher than I am, so we still have a sink full by the end of the week. However, again I am very obsessive about rinsing them off so they don't stink and so they're not so gross to do. I HATE with a filthy passion icky water!

    Never.............because it's my husband's job. :)

The rule is they have to be cleaned before he goes to bed and he empties the dishwasher in the morning so that I can try to fill it as I cook.

About every-other day. Basically whenever the dishwasher is full.

@Mrs Grape: Well, dishwashers are few and far between where I live, so there is a lot more involved than just a little water and soap. We do them probably every other day, sometimes longer. I wish we did them more often, but it's really time consuming, so we tend to try and do a bunch all at once. Rent on an apartment without dishwasher = $1400, rent on one with it: $1800+. Scary.

We don't have a dishwater. I was dishes once a day or once every other day depending on how many dishes we use. When we are cooking a big meal they get done right away, when I butter a piece of bread the knife waits until the next time I do the dishes to get done.

I do dishes almost every day but sometimes I let something soak overnight - but things like plates, cups, silverware gets washed after each use (usually) and then I handwash a lot of dishes as well. I run the dishwasher every 2-3 days

I like to conserve water so I don't run the dish washer until it's full. The most we'll go is every other day. I don't like the smell of scummy dishes..yuck.

FI and I are bad sometimes about getting the dishes in the dishwasher before we go to bed though.

I work from home most days so I put them up first thing in the morning (after my coffee of course)

We wash our dishes daily. I cook, he does the dishes each night. We have a dishwasher but since it is just the two of us, it's usually faster to just wash by hand. It seems like more work to rinse and load the dishwasher and then have to put them away. On the weekends, we use the dishwasher, though.

We usually only eat dinner at home, and I need to do those dishes as soon as we're done eating (which drives DH crazy, he always wants me to just let them sit, which I CANNOT do). On the weekends, our breakfast dishes will probably sit in the sink until late afternoon and then they'll go in the dishwasher. We probably run the dishwasher every two to three days. I HATE having dirty dishes in the sink, it drives me crazy and I'm always scared that I'll pick up a dirty dish and see a bug underneath :(

Ha - the first fight DH and I had after we moved in together was about dishwashing procedures!

Anyhow, as soon as we are finished with a plate we rinse it (so that there is absolutely nothing left on it...sometimes using soap...this is DH's weird obsession) and put it in the dishwasher. We run the dishwasher once ever 2-3 days. Immediately after meals, once we have rinsed/loaded dishes into the dishwasher we wash non-dishwasher items (e.g. our good chef's knives, pots, pans, wooden cutting boards etc.) by hand, then dry them and put them away right away.

I would kill for a dishwaser (and washer and dryer!!!!) I don't currenly live with my FI but when we move in together (when my lease is up in may!) that is on my list of MUST HAVE's I came from a house with a dishwasher and oh how I miss it so!!! I wash dishes right after we eat dinner because I don't want the food to stick on and then i would have to scrub them umm yea no thank you!!! and (lucky for him) my kitchen is so tiny that there isn't really room for him to dry them :) hopefully only 5 more months of no D/w and no W/D!

Lately we've been letting them pile up b/c I'm not feeling well and hubby doesn't have time to do everything, but usually it's after every use. We agree on that one.

Before I had a dishwasher we'd wash the dishes pretty much every night/after every meal. Maybe sometimes 1 day, but usually before bed. Now that we have a dishwasher everything goes in there after every meal (and things that dont go in there get washed immediately) and we run it when it is full, which seems to be every other day or so.

probably 1-2 times a day, if you count filling the dishwasher as "doing" the dishes (we prob run it every 2-3 days?). we do it as needed, and don't let the sink pile up too much. we/hubby cooks a lot, at least once a day and usually 2x, and we don't have much space in the kitchen, so things need to be clean to have space to cook

I wash dishes at least twice a day and sometimes 4 times a day! With feeding 45 sanctuary cats plus a love of cooking - there's a lot of dishes to wash! Luckily, DH washes them too!

We have a dishwasher, so basically 1 - 2x a week. However, my FI likes to handwash dishes every time they're used, whereas I rather fill the dishwasher.

So, whomever gets to the dishes first is the method that gets completed.

dishwasher runs at least 1x a day (usually @night after supper), pots & pans are washed immediately after use to avoid the dreaded 3 day soak.

we wash when our dishwasher is full, so twice a week i'd say.  anything that can't be washed in the dishwasher is washed pretty much once we're done using it, so it doesn't sit in the sink for long.

I voted before I read the post. Silly mistake! I voted once a week because I myself actually do the dishes about once a week. DH usually does dishes since I usually cook. But we do our dishes once or twice a day, depending if we're home all day, how many dishes we use, etc. We don't have a dishwasher and definitely don't want to leave dirty dishes in the sink over night.

I usually do them every morning and sometimes at lunch time (I work afternoons). Evenings I'm more likely to leave them until morning because I'm tired. And because I probably won't be hanging out in the kitchen again until morning so what I can't see won't bother me ;-)

Oh, I should add that we don't have a dishwasher so I wash by hand.

I do, however, have housmates, but they do dishes maybe two times a week and my husband washes them maybe once every week or two :-). I think we're going to try to work out a more consistent chore rotation to share some of that responsibility, though
