We order our groceries online on Sundays, for delivery Monday morning. We pick out meals for the week and order the ingredients we need. It isn't major planning and doesn't take long since we have a lot of set recipes that we like. We eat out at most once a week, some weeks not at all. It definitely saves us quite a bit of money.
We eat out WAY too often. It hard not too when I am on campus all day long (yes, I am still a student :( ). I plan on cooking more often once we are officially married. Only 8 1/2 months to go!
We once went from January 1st to mid-April without cooking a single meal (unless cereal for breakfast counts!). For the new year and b/c we are mad po', we've been trying to cut way back on our restaurant/take-out meals.
It depends on the week, but somtimes it 2-3 times. Like tomorrow, for example, I have a class for work from 8-3, then I have to go to work until like 6:30 after, so won't get home until around 7. if I come straight home. The hubs gets off work at 8am tomorrow, then has to jet off to an all day class for his work, so he won't get out until 5, but the place is over an hour away so he won't get home until later. It's probably going to be one of those days where one of us just picks something up on the way home because we just want to crash on the couch like vegetables. When we have days like this, it's just always so much easier and faster to get take out. Plus, with just 2 of us, sometimes the mess from cooking doesn't seem worth the hassle. We do want to get to the point, though, where we are eating homemade goodness daily. We've also noticed that many times, and this is unfortunate, it's actually much cheaper to each takeout (not like fast food, because we don't eat that junk), but togo from the sushi place or Italian place that's nearby.
We never eat out. I usually make good use of my crock pot (so dinner is done when you get home from work - - now that's fast food!) I also like to find one new recipe per week to try. That way we're always eating new food!
i'm trying so hard to stop eating out, but it is difficult some nights. i'm working on a menu spreadsheet to help plan grocery trips and nightly meals, but it's an unending task.
We're really trying to save money. Until right before the wedding, we ate out or ordered pizza ALL THE TIME! It helps now that we live farther away from restaurants and sandwich shops. We used to live right in a major shopping and dining area, but now we're at least a 15 minute walk or a drive to restaurants.
We eat out usually 2-3 times a week. during the week we may order pizza one night but on the weekends we go out for lunch on saturdays and breakfast sundays. I was happy with the habit until I started this diet! But I've lost 5 lbs this week so I guess its worth the sacrifice.
Pretty much all the time. We both work jobs with 12+ hour days, and living in NYC there is soooo much quick, cheap, healthy delivery options, we end up not cooking a whole lot. I am trying to cook more- somewhat successfully - but I have found that when its not consistent, its hard to keep fresh groceries around. And if I am going to cook, I want a lot of fresh veggies and protein!
We eat out once a month at MOST. I cook every single night, and pack both our lunches. And I work 80-90 hours a week, but all the cooking and lunch-packing falls on me, since my husband works even longer hours than I do. I usually wind up making two things as well, since my husband eats meat and I do not.
Seriously, if I can manage to cook all our meals (and I make everything from scratch -- never anything from a box or microwaveable), then nobody can use "not having time" as a valid excuse! You just have to sacrifice something else from your home life to make the time.
We used to eat out 3x a week or more without being too aware of our bad habit. With the economy not looking so bright, we've been trying to cut down on unnecessary costs. Now we try to go out once a week and cook at home as often as we can. I find a lot of food inspiration online with various cooking blogs. I'm always up for a challenge and try to recreate delicious looking recipes. I go to the local farmer's market on the weekend to find some fresh ingredients, and Costco is also by best friend.
I've learned to make a lot of meals I find in my favorite restaurants, and it helps curb the desire to go out. My fiance and I used to go out for sushi every week, and now we make it at home. It's super easy and very affordable.
Even though i live in NYC and there are tons of places to order from, we usually make all of our meals at home. Including packing lunches for work. We will sometimes treat ourselves to go out once a month. We found that reducing the amount of eating out made it extra special. We also do date night type meals at home and take turns making a special meal for one another.
We used to eat out about once a week... but the recession has hit us and we are now trying to keep it to once per month. Fortunately we both like to cook... but we both also really like to go out, and there are so many good restaurants near our house! It's hard :(
"We" don't eat out more than twice a week, and often only once a week. But the older I get the more dinner out during the week is how I catch up with friends, or dinner out before a show. Some weeks I'm out every night! I have been trying to tone it down a bit lately, though...
I was hell bent on cooking more after we got married, but unfortunately working in finance means we both eat dinner at our desk 5 nights a week.
I try to make it for it by cooking up a storm on the weekends.
Ordering groceries online (fresh direct) on saturday for sunday delivery helps with menu planning.
with the economy and having to pay for the wedding, we've cut out our eating out a lot. we used to go out to eat 4-5 times a week and its down to 1-2 times and packing lunches
This is very interesting.
I love to cook but I don't have the time or energy to meal plan, so we use Dream Dinners (www.dreamdinners.com). Basically, they do the meal planning and shopping for me, but I do the preparation and cooking. I cook most nights; however, I have school on Thursday nights so I don't cook then, and Friday night we usually go out. I also pack our lunches everyday for work.
Just once a week- we order out on Wednesdays now that Lost is back on! We're trying to save money for all the expenses to come ;)
On a good week we eat out once, but sometimes we do eat out twice. We almost always eat out on the weekends so it does add up. We're trying to be good and cut it down to once a week only.
when I'm extra busy I'll do large reheatable meals on the weekend, EASY recipes/mixes
crockpot soup/stew (wildtree mixes or homemade)
lasagna (lazy way you just need noodles, sp. sauce (I like Classico), ricotta, cheese)
bread (for sandwiches)
pork roast or pork loan (I love real simple's fennel crusted pear recipe, but add a little more oil)
We're really good with dinners in but once in a while I get lured into long boozy lunches with the guys at work that always bust my budget. D'oh.
Once a month for us (although he eats out for work) and when we eat out we SPLURGE. It's my favorite system. I'm not working though so it's a lot easier for me to cook at night.
The system I've found that works best is to settle on a breakfast (the same breakfast every day, or cereal if Id on't feel like making something).
I don't pack his lunch because apparently that's not cool.
I make something quick and made up during the week, using our 50 lb bucket of rice, frozen veggies, frozen chicken, stuff like that.
On the weekends I plan 3 or 4 recipes I would like to try and we eat those.
And I cook everything in HUGE portions, freeze leftovers when I can, and eat leftovers for pretty much every lunch.
I have been TRYING to cook more, and have been succeeding to some extent. But we still order in probably 1 - 2 nights during the week, and we go out to dinner 1 - 2 nights a week. It gets really pricey, but I love restaurants and eating out with friends. And sometimes I just don't have the time to cook, or I forgot to defrost something.... but I am getting better!
I keep promising my FH that after we are married and I'm done with school it will be a culinary O in our kitchen....though I sincerely doubt I'll follow up with that. My biggest motivator for not eating out are all the extra calories. If I make it myself I eat less of it and know exactly going in.
We only eat out on special occasions. Which lately has been limited to birthdays. Sometimes the mister surprises me with dinner though "to show his appreciation for everything I do". :)
For those of you that say its cheaper to order out I dont see how thats even possible. The average dinner is AT LEAST $15 per person, after drinks, tax and tip you easily spend $50 on ONE MEAL. I grocery shop about once a month (big shopping) and spend $400 for the two of us and our cats (cat food, litter, andcat toys add up too!). That includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert/snacks. I usually bring my lunch, but fiance buys lunch during the week.
The other night I made an awesome porterhouse steak dinner with rosemary roasted potatoes and steamed broccoli and it probably cost me less than $10 per person to cook. In a resturant you would be charged at least twice that.
Remember you ALWAYS pay more for the convenience. I have an extra $150 a month just from bringing lunch instead of buying it every day. It definitely takes extra planning and effort though, but I say its worth it! Also crock pots are your best friend! Just throw in the ingredients in the morning, cook it on low, and come home to a cooked meal. Perfect!
We usually get take out once a week (chinese food, pizza) and go out to dinner once on the weekend. We loooove bad food and used to get takeout more often. I also love cooking but by the time we get home from the work/gym it is usually 8:30 and sometimes am not motivated. I try to cook something big on Saturdays and Sundays so we will have leftovers during the week. During the week I would say we have an "easy" meal one night (like breakfast or frozen food) and the other nights I try to do it up.
I got an electric pressure cooker for Christmas which is a life saver. You can make yummy complicated meals in less than 45 minutes. For those who still need to register, I highly recommend it!

Sometimes I feel like when you're just a couple, it's cheap and easy to eat out/order in, even though it's healthier (and sometimes) cheaper to cook for yourselves.
How often do you eat out/get takeout, and do you wish you cooked more (or are you happy with your habits)?
I'd ideally like to eat out only once a week.
Any tips for eating in more? I know you should plan your meals on the weekend, but that sounds kind of exhausting, since I work so many hours.
Giada DiLaurentiis did a great series where she made like 4 meals out of rotisserie chicken... and none of them seemed too "similar" (so they were useable for an entire week, and I don't think you'd get bored of it). Pretty cool! I'm trying to find the link!
