Just curious. Just moved into our new house 10 days ago and have killed 3 spiders, a couple house centipedes, and currently trying to get rid of a small ant problem.
How often (on average) would you say you find bugs in the warmer months?

We get this every year about this time of year. Spiders, ants around the sink, and Asian beetles. We have a bug guy that comes, he uses industrial strength at our house because our back and side yard butt up to wooded areas. Once he comes, fingers crossed for no rain for a few days, we don’t see anything all year. We didn’t use him last year, dh just sprayed himself, but it didn’t work near as well and we got spiders again in the fall.

tksjewelry: how much do you pay for him to come spray? FH says we don’t have enough bugs to call an exterminator, but it would make me feel better.

regit45: *shudder* house centipedes :'(
I’d suggest looking in to drione dust. It’s a powdered dessicant that’s safe to use around pets and babies if applied correctly. You can apply it yourself and it lasts for about 6months.

regit45: I think it’s 75ish. It’s worth it to me because it does last all year, he does under our house and has special stuff for our small yards that kills flees too (which won’t make our pups sick). I got bit by a baby brown recluse last year, and I will never risk that again.

regit45: Spiders we just let out, but house centipedes MUST DIE. They are the most horrid little animals I know. The first time I saw one (first year living in Canada, so about 7 years ago) I thought it must have escaped from a banana box or something. I still don’t want to believe they live here on a permanent basis.
Anyway, whenever we have an insect problem (usually at the cottage) we use diatomaceous earth. It’s not dangerous to you or your pets – just to stuff with an exoskeleton, so it should work with all those things you’ve encountered.

every spring we get ants… i hate them. I usually get some ortho spray thing from home depot and spray the entire house… it works very well.. they are usually all gone within the week. It also kills spiders and crickets..
One year i had crickets in my basement…

I get flies every summer. It’s sooo annoying! Lately, I’ve also been having a roach problem. I live in an apartment in NYC, so no matter how clean my own apartment is, the bugs are all around. I second the suggestions for diatomaceous earth. Kills anything with an exoskeleton.<br />

living in the bush in Australia bugs and spiders in the house is something I know lots about. We have some sort of bug or spider in our house daily sometimes more than once a day. For ants baby powder around the place they are getting in. Ants won’t cross the line. If you line your doorways and window ledges they won’t cross it. You can leave ant baits out of reach of pets on the ants side of the baby powder to kill the nest. Spiders you can just pick them up and re home them outside if they are not dangerous. I don’t know if you have dangerous ones in your area if you do spray them with hair spray if you don’t have a strong bug spray, the hair spray makes the hairs on their legs stick together and they can move then they die from a second dose of the hair spray. Spray all bench tops and inside cabinets with a mix of vinigar, water and eucalyptus oil, roaches hate it and will move out quick smart. Also dried basil leaves inside the pantry on the shelves will help keep away mice. Keep away all fallen tree branches and empty flower pots or anything else around the outside of your houses and keep the lawn short so you don’t get snakes. If you do get a snake the best way to kill it is chop it head off with a shovel. Once again I don’t know if snakes are a problem for you guys. If they are be carfull you know waht the dangerous ones look like in your area and if you can’t kill it instantly just leave it and call a wild life guy. If you get a wasp nest you need to put special powder that kills it into the nest then burn the nest a few days later. This is all the things we did when we lived in the bush. It does get to a stage that a spider living in the house doesn’t bother you though it controls the flys.

all the time.
i live on a ranch in the country, so bugs are just fact of life. we have an exterminator come every month to keep things under control, but we’re never completely rid of them. we always find the odd spider or beetle or something. if we’re having a problem with a specific type of bug we just let our bug man know and he’ll take care of it.

Our old house was terrible for bugs!! We sprayed the yard ourselves, and it didn’t seem to work at all. Now, we moved and are in an apartment, and they take really good care of it so far.

I’m from the UK where the worst thing you see is the odd spider. We’ve just moved to Mauritius in the Indian Ocean though and now I see a different horror every day! We’ve had giant roaches, ants, mini ants, a huge grasshopper, a spider with a pouch full of babies ready to drop, lizards, and last night a tiny snake, in our living room!!! Tropical paradise it may be but I would happily leave all these things behind.

we have ants from like, april to october. no matter how clean the house is (and it’s pretty damn clean), we get ants. terminix comes a couple times a year to spray for bugs. it’s the best thing ever. the ants started super early this year, and as soon as terminix came, they were gone.
