We’re getting ready to register, and I wasn’t planning on getting formal china (I want nice-enough every day dishes that I could dress up with accent plates) but my Dad’s wife really thinks we should.
I can’t think of when I would use them other than Thanksgiving/Christmas/Easter. Do people use them for other occasions? Like, do you have friends over and break out the china? I was hoping to register for only one set (which apparently only exists in my head) but I can’t eat scrambled eggs off of metallic edged dishes!

We don’t evn have any haha. We registered for dishes that were nice enough to be formal, without being incredibly so, but also fine to use for every day. Sophie Conran for Portmeiron in Celadon.

We didn’t get any of our own. It’s crazy expensive and will almost never get used.
My great grandmother gave me her formal china but it’s been more trouble than it’s worth. We live in an apartment so it’s in a box in a closet. We’re always worried about breaking it. I’ve never used it once but can’t get rid of it because of sentimental reasons

@MaryRachel: I am 40 and have never had formal china. I’ve never missed having it and would never use it if I did so I will not register for it. That’s just me, I’m not a formal entertainer. i prefer things to be relaxed with easy clean up-throw everything in the dish washer and don’t worry. my sister did what it sounds like you want. She has a pretty white set that looks delicate but is quite sturdy and then has fun accent pieces. Don’t just get it to get it. Decide what you want and go for it!

I didn’t register for china because my mom does all the big meals. She pulls out the china for Easter/Thanksgiving/Christmas and sometimes birthdays. I love having the table set beautifully.

Ooooh not to threadjack OP, but @Tigerlilybride: how do you like the Sophie Conran for Portmeirion??? I have looked at the white online and think it is what we will register for as our everyday china. Need to go see it in the store to be sure though. How is the quality? Do you like it?

@kmb727: I love it! Its grogeous, and unique which makes it perfect for me 🙂 I love the colour we went with, its very light blue.

@kmb727: Not at all–thanks for asking; I like that one too. Its definitely what I’m looking for in the white-but-still-interesting department.
