Just curious of what the average of everyone here is.  I actually have no idea how much you're supposed to exercise in a week but I finally took the plunge to join the gym :) So how often do you exercise in a week? And if you care to share for any bees trying to lose weight before the big day, what exercises do you do?

I work out on average about 3 times a week...I take a Tae bo class for cardio and a  body bar class for weight lifting to get toned...I usually like to mix it up with classes so I dont get bored. On my own I usually do the elliptical machine and free weights...my gym has a pool and I am going to start swimming to change up my cardio also.

I recently lost close to 50lb,s and I'm trying to lose a few more before the big day. I do a mixture of aerobics and weigh training. I take kick boxing, hip-hop dancing and boot camp classes at my gym. I'm hoping to start teaching sometime in the near future. I also just started Weight Watchers to get over this plateau.

I work out 5 times/week - but it took me years to work up to that. When I first joined a gym I went twice/week til it was second nature, then upped it. If you jump in too fast, you'll get burned out and quit. Just try to go consistently to start out and work up from there :)

As for which exercises - I think the best use of your time and money would be to get 3 sessions or so with a personal trainer. Think of it as an 'up front' investment - they'll teach you how to use your time 10x more efficiently than you would use it without them (ie actually working your ass off in a half hour instead of walking slowly on the treadmill for 2 hours). It's a bit pricey but absolutely worth it. I always say it's like going to the dentist - of course you know how to brush your teeth, but it doesn't mean you skip out on the professionals if you want to do it right.

There are a LOT of threads on here with specific workout advice.. try a search and you'll come up with tons.

    Good luck!

I work out a couple times a week. I also try to walk everywhere I can and go as far to park as far away from a store as possible.

If you are willing to spend a little bit of money, P90X is an amazing series of workouts that you can do in your home. I do cardio 3-4 times a week... my favorite cardio exercise is on a stationary recumbent bike. I love it because you can feel it working in your butt and legs immediately, and I don't feel that way after working out on an elliptical or treadmill. Then I lift weights (P90X) on the days that I don't do cardio.

I just want to echo some of the PP about starting with something you can commit to and conquer that first (1 or 2xs a week if you currently haven't been going at all)

Then you can add a day, make sure you can do that as second nature, and add another day, etc.

Take advantage of every single thing the gym has to offer...you're paying for it! They'll happily give you a tour of the different areas and show you how to efficiently plan out your workouts in each of the areas.

If you gym has workout classes, give those a shot. They will kick your ass but also be fun! You'll get to know people in the classes and it helps keep you accountable to keep showing up every week.

Congrats on working towards a healthier lifestyle!

I honestly dont exercise more than taking the dog on a walk for about 45 minutes to an hour several times a  week. My heart rate gets up and the exercise is sustained so I think its prety good for me!

I walk my dog for twenty minutes every morning Monday - Friday and I also walk said dog for 30-45 minutes most evenings after dinner and in the weekends.

I've been walking like this just over a year now and I lost ten kg's in the first six months (20 lb's?) and have kept it off for the last six months. Yay!

Even if hitting the gym is not your thing brisk walking is a great way to get healthy and gain some fitness :-)

When i start back at the gym, I do everyday, till it becomes automatic and i don't even have to think about what i'm doing after work, on saturdays, etc.  Previous obligations automatically take it down to 5days.  You don't have to spend HOURS there ... i'm usually there almost an hour sometimes a little longer depending on how i feel.

In a week where nothing terrible happens (i.e. getting sick, someone dying, etc.) I workout at least 4 times, 5 times is ideal.  If I'm feeling it, I will 6 times, and there has been more then one week where I did some form of "exercise" every day (I don't really count yoga as exercise, but some people do).

I go 4-5 days a week, but I make them count. Spin class twice a week, weights twice a week, pilates once to twice a week, and usually some cardio class in there, like Turbo kick or Drills. Some days i just chill on an elliptical or use the one at home, but those are usually extra days. I'm doing double work outs right now (two classes, back to back) in order to burn off these 5 pounds from the holidays and I'm really watching what I eat. Walking/yoga/pilates isn't enough for me--i have to break a serious sweat to feel like it was worth it. Can't undo years of athletic training I guess :P

I voted for "inconsistent" because to be honest, when I'm working out, I work out 5-6 days per week, but I sometimes... lose focus? and won't work out for a few weeks/a month or so... and then I reinvest myself. I need to get into a groove!

I workout around 4 times a week.  I teach Body Pump once a week (and every other Saturday), before I teach that, I try to run on the tread for 30 minutes.  I try to do a Cardio Fusion class on Sunday mornings which kicks me butt each time.  And then I like to mix it up.  Maybe a kickboxing class, a yoga class or if I don't feel like going to the gym, I'll do a workout on Exercise TV.  I danced last night at home for 30 minutes and it was great!

I've been on the P90X bandwagon since about 7+ weeks now. I started off well and did nearly all of their workouts as directed. Which is 6 times a week! And they are all an hour or longer.

Recently I have paved off because I have been extremely busy with the wedding planning. (Only 6 months and 24 days to go. Yikes!) So I am still doing atleast 4 times a week.

Well I've fallen off the horse for a while but I just started the Million Meter Challenge for 2011 so to be successful at that, I'm going to have to be working out 3-5 times a week each week.  So that's what I voted!

I work out 7 days a week, with the occasional missed day if I'm sick or traveling or something like that.  Though I actually really like getting a couple runs in on vacation, even if I take more off days then.  I'm not sure I'd actually recommend anyone work out everyday though... I've built up a bit of a physical addiction and start to feel really down if I don't get my heartrate way up for awhile.

My workout routines are built around performance-related goals - lifting heavier weights, getting better at a sport.  I love interval running and heavy weight lifting because there's measurable goals that feel really good when you reach them.  I DO highly recommend performance goals over body response (scale, measuring tape) goals because they're more fun!

Does your gym offer classes?  I would say to start by trying one or two of those a week, then have another day or two where you hit the cardio machines then try to do some of the same exercises you learned in class.  It's a lot cheaper than a personal trainer, but you still get the benefits of someone teaching you new things.

My goal for now is at least 3 times a week. As soon as im in tune with that I probably want to continue going to the gym 3 times a week and do some workouts at home as much as I can on my off days. Like Jillian Michaels or Billy blanks.

4-6 days a week. I always allow myself a day to rest. I have yoga twice a week, pilates at least once a week (if not twice) and kettlebell class twice a week. I also try and get in a few miles on the treadmill. i need variety or i get bored!

I'm trying to get in a proper running routine of 3 times a week. I've entered our local half-marathon to make sure I keep running :S

On days where I don't run, I have been trying to get on the Wii Fit or play Wii Just Dance :)

    My general routine is

Cross Fit Mon, Wed, Sat and usually at lesat 1 day I add in 20 minutes incline walking on the treadmill.

Two days a week I do 10-15 minutes of yoga to maintain my flexibility and help prevent injury

One day a week I try to do some other cardio or a less intense version of some functional training. Usually this is either Sunday or Thursday.

Does walking our puppy count? :) She doesnt go far though.

I was at a point where I was going to the gym 6 days a week for a few years. Sometimes I felt it was a little too much. Then I cut it back to about 4. Lately though it is about onceEmbarassed I am trying now that the holidays are over to atleast work out at home everyday and hit the gym a few times a week. At home I love to do Jillian Micheals 30 days to Shred!

I just got really strict with myself.  I do every other day, occasionally with an extra day in there- but never go more than two days off.  So, at least three times a week.  However, now that I am back in school, it will likely get more sporadic :(  I do a yoga sequence that kick my butt.  I used to run, but this is just as cardio, I do it just as intensely, with less poundage to my knees and boobs and back...  I am just happy to have found something I love so much that challenges me that I can stick with, and that clears my head even more than my running did.

I'm a gym rat and used to go to the gym every single day, unless I was flat on my back with pneumonia!  But my SO has convinced me that I don't need to go as often cause I will burn-out, so now I workout 5-6 days a week.

(although I should)  I used to go the the gym all the time when I was trying to get to my goal weight...well I got there and well... I quit going to the gym.

I know, I know, pretty dumb but I'm just having the hardest time getting back into it.

Usually 5 to 6 days a week.  I wake up early (5:30) and work out before I go to work, it's the only way I don't come up with an excuse NOT to work out.  I usually do cardio in the mornings and I like to run on the weekends. From here until the wedding, however, I'm adding a couple strength training sessions with a personal trainer into the mix, so it'll be more like 7 to 8 times a week.  If I wasn't doing that I'd incorporate some strength training into my morning workouts. I want no regrets when rocking my dress.  None.

I'm inconsistent when it comes to going to the gym, but I would like to get into the habit of consistently going 3 times a week and then working up to 5-6 times a week.

I agree with PPs who say it is much harder to make excuses if you go before work!  I go 5-6 times a week, but only for about an hour each time.  I have been a slacker this week because my husband is sick and I feel really bad getting up early when he needs more sleep.  Here is what I normally do:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday mornings - cardio + stretching

Wednesday, Friday mornings - 1 hour yoga class

Sunday evenings - 1.5 hour yoga class

usually once or twice if I'm lucky.  I work 10 hour days and DH works 12.  We often get home really late and eat dinner at 8:30 and in bed by 10pm.  I usually work out on my 2 or 4 day weekends but I often don't like working out 2 days in a row - I like a day off, but my schedule wont' allow it.

I go at least 4x a week, up to six depending on my week and if my body needs a break or not. Luckily my work provides a gym with classes and a discount at my local gym or I doubt I'd have the opportunity for that since I work & go to school FT. I used to do a cardio/weight training class and I know people swear by weights but I do not have the body type for it. I was in the military and a dancer in HS so I've got a lot of muscle. I can't stress how important it is to do what you enjoy. That being said I usually do cardio Zumba and a dance class called Body Jam. You can focus on muscle strength during these classes as well, and 60 mins goes by because I'm having fun, not "working out".

I have always hated the gym. I still pay a monthly membership to Bally's because I spent so much money on the contract, and now only pay $25 a month - so I keep it "just in case." I have tried all the machines, and I don't know what I am doing. I had a personal traning session once and I couldn't walk for a week. Then came Zumba. I started in the fall and currently go 2x a week at a dance studio. I am going to start going three times. It is amazing! So much fun, and i am drenched in sweat (ew) when I am done.
