I'm going to say sometimes.  Hershey only barks for certain strangers or when she needs to go out.  She does whine and cry when I come home because she's so happy to see me.

He barks when he sees squirrels in the yard, hears someone talking outside that he thinks is in our yard or when someone arrives.  He is a schnauzer and they are super territorial so he kinda freaks sometimes when he doesn't know who is at the door.  Once you are inside though he gives hugs.  lol

Our dog barks once in a blue moon, only if she's really scared.  She was abused before going to the shelter where we adopted her and apparently she's scared to bark.  Since she's losing her fear of bigger men and sirens, she's barking even less.  We feel pretty spoiled now, having a dog that never barks!

Whenever anyone comes to the door, whenever the neighbor walks her dachsunds past the front door, and whenever we're out in public and he decides some person walking by is a threat. He never barks when interacting with other dogs, and when someone he knows comes to the house he stops barking quickly once he recognizes them. Our only real problem with his barking is when we're out in public, on a walk or at a cafe or whatever, and he decides someone is a threat and lets out hostile barks at them. He's not a nervous barker or a lonely barker, so that's something to be thankful for.

He barks once if he hears us at the door or in the garage and we are taking to long to come inside. He'll also bark if someone strange (like a delivery guy or handyman) comes to the door. And if my BF provokes him when they are playing together, haha.

I still put rarely though because when he does bark it lasts for maybe 15 seconds.

Mine doesnt bark very often at all, only when she is spooked by someone/something.  You wouldnt happen to be watching The Dog that Saved Christmas on ABC family right now would you?

I picked rarely because he doesn't never bark, but it is very, very rare -- maybe five times a year? It's only when he is in the front yard by himself and a stranger physically undoes the gate and wanders into the yard.

And by bark, he lets out one, singular bark. I have never in my ten years heard him bark continuously or maliciously.

I put never because she would only bark if someone came angrily pounding on the door that she didn't know.

Otherwise, I trained her not to bark.  If someone looks dangerous or is drunk, she will bark to protect me (like camping once this angry man was yelling on his phone and came walking- like he was delirious- toward our site and she was all of a sudden a "big mean dog").

My lab, Cooper has about a million different barks! There's "I'm hungry" bark, "I'm thirsty" bark, "I gotta pee!" bark, "I'm bored" bark and my least favorite "I think something is wrong" bark. The last one doesn't happen too often, but its usually when I'm alone at night and it really gets my heart beating!

Our dog rarely barks - that's part of why we picked her from the shelter!  When you live in an apartment, IMO, it is rude to your neighbors to have a dgo that barks all of the time.  So we specifically tried to avoid that.

Our dog barks when the last person to come home comes home. If anyone is near our door or she hears another dog barking. When I got her she hardly ever barked but she's pretty protective now and will bark when anyone comes near the door or knocks.

pretty frequently, but not constantly. mostly when he hears the doorbell, when someone comes in to the apt who he doesn't know (though he stops when we hold him), and sometimes when he's playing. outside he barks more, especially when we're in the park and he's playing.

My dog likes to GRUMBLE :)

He makes this throat noise that sounds like "ro-ro-ro-ro-ro" and runs in circles.  If he gets REALLY excited, then he barks.  I think the "ro-ro-ro" is a result of us training the "little dog syndrome" out of him. It's like he's trying to be good and not yip yap, but he's so excited that he has to let off steam somehow. It's really cute!

Also, he has a shrill "eiyiyi" yell that he will make at cats that is absolutely hysterical.

Ugh, this is one of the things I WISH I could change about my dog.  She barks at any little noise out front (car door, people talking, etc) and we live on a busy street.  She also barks when she goes in the backyard when it's dark, when she wants to play and we're not giving her attention, when she's frustrated, when she's playing with other dogs and they're not playing the way she wants.  She's what we call a "sassy bitch."

@Jaynee:it's pretty easy to train your dog not to bark. a lot of people use a spray water bottle. what worked for me is take a coke can and put some coins in it, then tape the top shut so no coins fall out. every time your dog barks, shake the can. they hate it...my dog stopped barking within a week.

Our lab barks when she is startled (say she's napping and suddenly hears the door open or a loud knock) and it's usually only 1 single WOOF. She'll also bark when she's playing with other dogs at the dog park and gets frustrated that she can't catch them. We don't like that so we usually stop her from playing that way. The only other time she barks now is when she can't go somewhere with one of us. If we're running on the track and she can see us but isn't allowed to run with us, she'll get very upset and start barking. My father in law also told us a story about when he was out photographing a stream in the middle the woods, he had to climb down to this area where she couldn't go and so she started barking, as if to warn him it was dangerous or to tell him, hey I can't go there, pay attention to me!

We had a big problem with her barking when she temporarily moved to California with me, she was barking when I had to put her in her crate or when I had to shut her in my room, she has a problem with being pent up in small spaces. We solved that by bringing her back home to Seattle and not putting her in crates anymore. It was sad because we just didn't expect that to be a problem.

For the most part she's a whiner, she'll whine to "ask" when she wants up on the couch or the bed (she's not allowed to just jump up if we're there). She'll whine when she wants to get to her toys in cabinet and she'll whine is she needs to go out.

So to make a long story short, I'd like to say she barks rarely (but it's much more than I think!) And she's big "whine-talker"

Cheena usually only barks when someone is at the door, or if she needs to protect us from an evil squirrel or cat. Occasionally, she'll bark at the mastiffs behind the fence to tell them to shut up when they're howling at sirens (it usually works, too!).

The only reason I count Cheena's lack of barking as odd is because she's a chihuahua. Chis are usually known for barking a lot more than they need to! I lucked out with my little girl. :)

@kitzy: I wasn't a fan of the spray bottle or can of coins, but I think I may try the can.  We've come to the conclusion that she is a high-anxiety dog.  When she barks at noises outside all her hair stands up and sometimes even if we bring her to another room and distract her, she continues as if she can't help it.

At about 8 months old she suddenly went from playing with any and every dog at the dog park, to being extremely unpredictable around most dogs and being what we see as aggresive.  Our trainer doesn't think she's aggressive, she thinks that she feels uncomfortable and doesn't know how to react so she jumps on the other dog and gets defensive.  She's a ball of anxiety and we don't know why.  She is proof that just because you get a puppy at a young age and train and work with it constantly, doesn't mean you're going to have the perfect dog :)

@Jaynee:have you tried those calming collars? it worked for a coworker of mine. dog parks can be tricky since they're neutral territory. if your trainer doesn't think your dog is being aggressive, why not let your dog go crazy for a little bit (but be sure to watch for signs of aggression). a lot of what we might think is aggression is actually play, and i know my dog calms down A LOT at the dog park after trying to prove his dominance...he's only 25 pounds but always goes for the much bigger dogs!

My dog barks very rarely to almost never.  Like really it's about once every 6 months, and it almost doesn't even sound like a bark.  It's a very strange noise, more like a talking howl?  I don't know, it's so rare it's hard to explain.  Had her for 3 years now and thought maybe she was scared to bark.

My dogs bark at the other dogs in the neighborhood through the fence (I think its a game for one of em...he will let out a bark or two, wait to see if the other dogs come to the fence and then they all proceed to bark and "attack" each other through the fence).

They also bark at delivery trucks driving by, like UPS. Even if the trucks dont stop at our house.  Ive come home several times and you can hear my boy dog barking in the house...just barking for no reason. He's very strange. There is a skylight, and birds get on it, so maybe thats what it is.

@Jaynee: My girl dog was like that too. She was really irritating. I decided she needed someone to play with, who could kinda be at her beck and call, not like a human.  When we got our boy dog, she calmed WAY down. She kinda mothers him, but also just has a playmate (even when she doesnt want one!).  She still barks of course, but the difference is really night and day with a second dog.  I dont know if you situation would allow it, but you may consider it.

I have two dogs, one is an Australian Shepherd mix. He barks whenever he has a reason- like someone is in the hallway righy by our door (which in an apt building is often) or another dog barks at him on walks. My other dog is a lab mix, and he barks very rarely- someone would have to be coming INTO the apt for him to say anything. More often he does the grumbly-growl thing when he wants attention from us.

    Phantom    February 2011

Our lab mix (80+ lbs) rarely ever barks when he's with us. The last time he barked was on Thanksgiving Day, when we were visiting my parents (who also have a dog). The other dog needed to go out and was jumping around to get someone's attention. Our dog sat up, looked at the other dog and let out one authoritative "woof!" to get the other dog to cool it. We're always surprised to hear our dog's "voice" since we hear it so rarely. We tease him that he's got a Barry White bark. :)

Though, to be perfectly honest, the kennel where we boarded him last year said he barked constantly, so who knows what his MO is?

Penny barks when she is next door playing with Shiska and sees people through the fence (she follows Shiska's lead), or while playing with him/other dogs.

Otherwise she kind of grumble-growls affectionately when she is really excited to see you for pets & playtime (ie: if we are out for errands in the morning and she is a home she will "grumble" and rub/lean up against our legs for love as if she is saying "oooooooooh"), but will stop if you tell her to "hush".

The only other time I have ever heard her bark was on two occasions, both involved drunk males (neighbours) approaching our house(in the dark) when my partner was not home.
