I posted elsewhere about my search for mascara for my sensitive eyes, and in combing the int0rwebs it occurred to me that part of my problem may be that I keep my mascara for too long, thus introducing lots of bacteria into the eye area and furthering the irritation.

I'm reading now that you are supposed to replace your mascara every 3-6 months, but that seems so often! And it's so expensive! I certainly haven't run out in 3 months, and at $25 a pop for the nice stuff, that could get very expensive real fast.

How often do you replace your makeup? Do you replace because you run out or for hygeenic (or other) purposes? Do you have any money-saving tips for makeup longevity?

I used to replace at least my mascara in the recommended amounts of time, but right now I am pretty darn poor so everything is being stretched to the limit. I'm scraping the edges of the blush compact, down to a nub on my concealer stick, and the micro-organisms in my mascara have probably invented the wheel by now, they're so evolved.

One thing I do to make it last longer is use brushes rather than applicators on my eyeshadow (they seem to soak up less stuff, I don't know for sure), and use my foundation VERY sparingly. I use a mousse and apply it with a sponge, which gets it much more even with less product than my fingers. But most days I just do powder instead, and there I buy loose rather than pressed. For some reason, it seems like I always run out of pressed powder quicker, and the little circle-shaped applicator thing falls apart almost instantly.

That being said, I am a diehard drugstore girl (I have exactly ONE tube of Mary Kay lipgloss and beyond that my biggest splurge is Physician's Formula) so YMMV with higher-end makeup.

i use the good ole pink and green one from maybelline.  i think it works great and it's about $3.50 so you don't have to feel bad about pitching it after 3 months!  plus, it works so much better when it's fresh :)

I replace all of my eye makeup every three months.  I have really sensitive eyes and I can feel a difference as things (especially the mascara) get older and grottier.  (I know it sounds like I'm a total kook.)

I'm allergic to a ton of mascaras that I've tried.  I think the Almay stuff is the best, but a friend recently recommended a sephora organics one that's $12 a tube.  May give that a go next time.

One other thought that could help--I've recently discovered that getting things to close to my lashline really irritates my eyes.  If I get the inside of the eyelid (like a makeup artist told me to do with eyeliner), even products I've used for years will make me want to rip my eyes out.

I'm pretty bad about this.  If I like a product, I'll use it until it's absolutely gone, no matter what the expiration date is.  I should probably pay more attention to the dates, I guess, but I've never had a problem.  I've got a couple of discontinued nail polishes that I've had since college...sad...

I use everything till it's gone, which probably isn't good for my health.  The ONLY thing I replace often is mascara - I usually get a new tube every 6 weeks or so.  I find that mine gets dried out.

Mascara is probably the only thing I replace on a regular schedule. My eyes are so sensitive and when mascara gets old, my eyes are a mess. But everything else I don't replace near as often as I should.

Well, mascara is liquidy and near your eyes, so I could see replacing it faster.

I think the shelf life on a powder blush is a really long time. Not much bacterial breeding ground there!

I was one of those kooks who voted for 'I buy so much makeup I dont need to replace it', Yup. I am rediculous, and mascara is one of my worst. I buy it constantly. I am never satisfied. I loved this one kind of mascara but now the company does not make, makeup anymore so I have been on the search for it since.

As for mascara for sensitive eyes (I did see your post, but didn't read what others commented) but I will suggest Marcell cosmetics, I am pretty sure though that they are a canadian brand. but my best friend is super sensitive to all things on her skin/lips/eyes/anywhere humanly possible. and she usus Marcell and has no issues. they're quite inexpensive as well (well from what I usually pay $20+ per mascara)

Also I am sure a clinique mascara would be subtable as well since they're targeted for sensitive skin.

    good luck!

The only thing I replace is mascara, that gets goopy for me around 3 months and I'm terrified of the bacteria. However, I'm a hypocrite because I have so many eyeshadows that I never run out of and I never replace until they are gone! Lipstick too- I don't replace it. I just keep buying and buying makeup. I should probably stop that! How often to you replace your makeup? : wedding makeup replacement mascara Icon Biggrin
