Just this year, I was 33 at the time. We both spent our twenties being care free and single and didn’t start dating until I was 30. We worked together throughout our relationship to get our finances in order and bought the house just before the wedding. I don’t regret it and never felt like a “loser” because I lived in an apartment. Buying a house is a huge expense, not to mention when I was single it was nice to have a landlord to do all the home maintenance. We love our house but it’s a lot of money and work being a homeowner. Rent and save as long as you can!

Cost of living is really cheap here so housing prices are low too. We closed on the house 5 days after my 25th bday, DH was 25 at the time too.

Lily_of_the_valley:  Part of it can be where you live. I was in CA where houses are crazy expensive and then my friends in the Midwest were buying houses because they’re so much cheaper comparitively.

We built our first home last year!!  We both lived with our parents before but have been dating for 8.5 years now!!! For us building was cheaper then buying.  My father is in construction and his dad has a plumbing company which he works for.  So for us we pulled alot of “friend” deals 🙂 Ohhh and we were both 23 when we started the build.

I bought my first house at 24, but that had a lot more to do with the market than anything else. I was looking at upgrading from what I was renting, and in talking to a realtor friend, I realized I could pay less and get more by buying than renting. In another part of the country it may have been different.

We just bought in July 2013. I was 26, DH was 30. We rented for 5 years to save up a down payment and DH worked out of town to make extrea $$. Buying a house is HARD. We also looked for 6 months before finding a house that was right for us. Long process but we love our house now and it was worth the wait.

I bought mine 1 month before I turned 22. Bought it all by myself too! Still have it actually. Use it as a rent house.

My husband bought his first place (3 storey townhouse) when he was 21.  When I was 24 and he was 26, we bought a 6 bed/3.5 bath house in the suburbs.  In 2012, we bought a rental property (a condo.)  And just this year we moved back into the city into a condo and I’m 28 and he’s 30.  However, there is no way I would have been able to buy anything alone, it’s all DH.  We kept the house in the suburbs for a while to rent it out, but being a landlord on a house is a lot of work, so we just sold that a couple months ago.

You guys will get there…just keep setting aside money and keep an eye on homes that you like, and the prices.  It may help to go talk to a mortgage broker, just to see what you would need to qualify, and so that you can plan your goals better!

Question for all you US bees – how much deposit do you need in order to buy your home, and what sort of price was your first home? Really interested in how it differs from the UK

In London it’s pretty much impossible to buy at the moment – the average house cost is up to £499,000! Average cost for first time buyers in London is still really high too, at £393,000. We’re looking at needing around £20,000 to get a deposit/fees etc at the moment 🙁

19! And by myself…with a little help from my parents. I was able to make my mortgage payments by having a few roomates as I was still in university. Since then I have gotten married, and now at 23 that place is sold and we are buidling our own!

Kellym84:  We live in canada not the US but we built a house last year I was 26 and he was 31. Our house was 440,000 and the minimum we could have put down is 5% here. That being said in order to that you must have very good credit , if you don’t I have heard of them asking for 40% plus  down. We decided to buy a house in may and had to save our downpayment buy end of July I have never saved so hard in my life lol

I bought my first home when I was 28. I’m 32 now and also now married. We’re currently selling our house and looking to buy another!
