Mr. Peng and I live in a condo and our time here is ticking.  We know we need to move before we think about having children, which is a few years off, but I find it strange to know that we may not permanently live in the same area where we are right now... I'd ideally just love to "put down roots" ASAP.  With the housing market in the pooper, it's easier for us just to stay put... luckilly we love the Bay Area so much but we just don't see ourselves here forever.

Are you moving?  How far away and why?

We'd like to move to either Davis, CA or back to Mr Peng's home state of Minnesota.  I am determined to stay put after our next move though.  I moved around a lot as a child and I really disliked it.  I don't mind moving within an area city, but would hate to uproot my kids and move them around to different schools once they're in. I hate being a slave to my mortgage here in the Bay Area.  I like living in small houses though... I don't feel the need for a larger house quite yet.

My husband works for the Federal Government and his job requires that he take a new assignment every 2-3 years. We are nearing the end of our tour in Chicago and will relocate to DC in April.

After that, we will have to move overseas. I look forward to the opportunity to see the world on the government's dime. Luckily we are in agreement about not wanting children so we can move wherever our hearts desire.

The major drawback is that my career does not allow me to work overseas. I am exploring my options however. We plan on purchasing a house in DC when we get there and holding on to it over the years, as we will have many assignments there over time.

We live in the Bay Area (San Jose) and we plan on staying around here.  Our dream is to live in Santa Clara, and we've been waiting for the right house for at least a year now.  With the drop in prices, we have a better chance of getting something now, but still we don't own our own home yet.  We life in my FIL's original house and the pressure is on to move out, but we can't seem to get an offer accepted for find a house worth putting an offer on.  Either way, we don't plan on going very far at all.

We are definitely not permanent... I LOVE living in D.C. and would stay here forever (been here going on 8 years), but my husband is only doing his intern year here and will be moving to Philly in June for the rest of his residency.  I have another 2-3 years to go before I finish my Ph.D., so we'll have at least 2 years of a long-distance marriage, but whenever I finish I'll move up to him, since he has 5 years of residency and then another year for fellowship, all in Philadelphia.  We will wind up settling down wherever I can find a job -- I'm in oncology research, and would like to go into industry, so if I work in NYC we'll live in Jersey, if I work for AstraZenica in Delaware, we'll live on the PA/DE border, etc.

We were planning on moving just outside of Chicago mid 2010, but I was recently laid off. So as of now it looks as if we may be moving just after the wedding (May 09)! We are also looking into moving to New Mexico depending on the job market and what we can find. At this point, the only thing I know for sure is that we are moving somewhere within the next year or 2! :)

We rent in NYC now too. We plan to buy an apartment in the next year or so and staying here for a minimum of 5 years, if not longer.

DH's parents live in HK and his dad is constantly hinting for us to move back. In fact, he really wants us to move to China because that's where he believes there will be a lot of growth for the finance industry.

We currently live in Dallas and have plans to move to Boston within the next few years, and then after that we have no idea. The plan is that we will eventually end up in Europe somewhere though, possibly Poland. We plan on having lots of kids and I don't even want to think about the hooros of moving them around the world!

We're definitely not permanent in Seattle.  We want to go home to California!  I lived in Davis for 10 yr Peng, and that is one of the places we're considering now.  It's a great place to raise a family, I'm just dreading going back to 100+ degree summers!

@ doctorgirl - Ooh I'm so happy to hear that you love Davis (pretty much everyone we talk to that has lived there really does!  It sounds like such a great place!)... I always want to live in a college town.  Right now we live in Berkeley... I think college town communities have so much access to education-centric programs and activities, and I love that!  I feel you on those summers though, and my allergies are TERRIBLE in the Sacramento area :(

Long haul! We're in the midst of a nearly 100K remodel (this remodel is our first, we're hoping to do 2 phases in the next 5 years) and bought in this neighborhood because we're:

    In an arts-heavy area

On the cusp of a Big 10 university and about 15 other great colleges (and I'm in grad school)

    Great family-friendly neighborhood

Great pre-k-12 schools in this city, as well as tons of developed parks

Just minutes from a major downtown

    We love where we live!

Pengy, I'm in the same boat as you. FI and I bought a condo a lil' less than 2 years ago. And while it's great for us now, the two bedroom condo will be real tight once the kiddies come along (mind you FI already has a 4 year old, whom have every weekend). Our goal now is to save $$ for our next house....well once we've paid off the wedding.  We'll 'prolly stay in the same area for now since Mr. Sushi does have his lil' boy to think about, but eventually we do want to leave the state. That might not happen for another 10 years or so though.

Mr. Powder Puff and I are planning to move right before the wedding, if not sooner. We love Chicago, but we would like to buy a house, and that just ain't gonna happen here! Plus I'd like to be closer to my mom when I start having babies. :) So we're packing up and moving back to Michigan.

I'm also attending grad school in the fall, in Michigan, so we'll HAVE to move no later than August.

I'm looking forward to it! Mmm... having a driveway and garage, washer and dryer, more space. Hooray!

i am moving into the house FI has owned for the past 3 years... We plan on staying at least until I'm out of grad school (2 more years!) but likely even longer... we just did some renovations and it's 4 bdr now so we could technically stay forever but neither of us want to..we want to buy a house together eventually, hopefully in 5 or so years. I can't wait for that! We'll probably stay in Boston though. :)

After my husband graduated he found a job at the place he had worked a couple times during school.  Luckily for me it's only 45 minutes away from my family!  I moved up with him after I graduated and we bought a house about 6 months before we got married, so I'd say we're here for the long haul.  By the way penguin, it's in Rochester, MN so I definitely advocate moving to MN, it's a great state!  (minus the senatorial debacle currently ongoing.....).

We bought our house the year before we got married - so since we own, we'll be there for a while. We really like the house and location, but neither of us see ourselves staying in our current city for very long. We both come from the country or small towns and are ready to go back.

We bought a house when we got engaged (he proposed inside of the master bedroom while we were in escrow). We are planning to raise our kids there, but eventually I would like to get out of LA. I want to be close to my family, who lives five minutes away, while I have little kids, but I would love to live in the Bay Area or Seattle one day.

We own the condo we live in now ... but plan to purchase a house before the wedding ... it will probably be our "starter home" because my fiance really wants to own a few properties and rent them out for additional income ... but all of these places are around Boston ... not in the city but in the suburbs around it. We love Boston. We would consider moving for a few years as we think it would be good for our relationship to be "on our own" (all of our families are within 25 min of us now!) but at the same time we can't see moving away!

Mrs Avo - if you need any Boston advice let me know, I know a lot about the area!!

We recently sold my townhome, and purchased a larger house.....so we'll be there for at least 5 years but we bought the house knowing it "could" be a permanent residence.  My FI is a scientist type so there is a possibility of him eventually taking a position with a university system...which would mean a move but that's years away.

We rent a two bedroom apt in Boston right now (technically Brookline).  We have high hopes of buying a place before or right after our wedding.  Hopefully we will be outta the apt and will purchase a condo before the end of 09.  We are looking to stay in the same area because FI is a medical resident and is committed to be here until June 2013.  Wow, that date looks weird in writing!

My fiance's little boy starts kindergarten in the neighborhood where we live, so we will probably stay in the area for the long haul. Luckily it's one of the nicest areas of Milwaukee, so it could be a worse place to be stuck. We live in a house that is a duplex (me upstairs, him downstairs) and I am not sure if we will combine into one household or stick with it as is. It would just be a bit expensive to stay the way we are, but we really love our house, so who knows. Good luck!

My fiance and I are looking into buying our first home together, and it will most likely be a temporary home for us.  Depending on where our careers take us, we're not sure where we would like to call home.  We have both lived in the same state for our whole lives, and it would be so nice to escape.  There is so much to consider when relocating.  It's tough, and we're not sure where we would like to be permanent in.

We're going to live rent free in my hometown close to my parents after the wedding. My FI teaches at our rural high school and if he teaches there for five years his student loans are forgiven. We're rooted for now, but are looking to move in a few years.

Great topic! I'm glad to hear that you love the Bay area so much. We're considering a move to Cali when I start interviewing for jobs.

For a long time, we were so certain that we wanted to stay in NYC and settle down here. But we're beginning to understand how prohibitively expensive it is to raise a family here. As much as we love the city, we don't want to "be slaves to our mortgage" like you phrased it. Even if the housing market became more affordable, money would go so much further elsewhere.

However, if money were no object, we would almost certainly stay in Manhattan and grow old here.

My FI and i have moved around a lot in the last few years with us graduating college, him in the Army, etc. My parents helped up with a DP on a nice house that we caught a great deal on. The 60+ year old lady had this big house all to herself and couldn't sell it to save her life basically. She just wanted to get of it and nobody wanted it. So, needles to say, we are lucky to be in what most people consider their 2nd or 3rd home and it has an incredible school right down the street. I want to stay! I just like it here, the location, etc. The only thing I DON'T like is that the people here are kind of snooty. Oh and it's close to work. It HAS to be close to work!!!!!

We currently own our home in Upstate NY and the location is primarily due to the fact that the FI is from here and we met in school. Ideally in the next couple years -hopefully no more than 3-5- we will move away from here. It's a great city and a absolute great place to raise kids. But I just don't see the city going anywhere nor our careers really going anywhere here either.
Ideally, I would love to move back to NYC where all my family is. FI's is spread all over.  Most likely we will sell this house and use the earnings to put a downpayment on a new house in NYC. I definitely do not ever see us moving into a apartment/condo...once you live in a house with a yard you never go back! Hahah.

I miss the big city so much!
