Okay so its seems like I'm grad school obsessed lately, but I need help ladies!

I can't seem to write my personal statement! I come of as cold because I find it extremely difficult to be anything but professional. My strength comes from my ability to put everything else in my life on the back burner and pursue things like school with intense dedication and professionalism. I'm going to get input from atleast one of my professors, but I want to have something decent put together.

So ladies, how personal did you make your personal statement?

I've tried researching online, but it always comes back with statements that are very personal or like these extreme experiences that I don't have.

When I applied to grad school, my personal statement included what drew me to the field and my path to applying for grad school (jobs, education, life experiences). I think that you can be professional by explaining your skills and how you developed them, whether as a student or at a job and how you think they will relate to grad school and your given field. HTH!

Why don't you say just that ... tell a personal story of a time in your life that you "put everything else on the backburner" and "pursued x with intense dedication and professionalism" and had "y" as an outcome.

    Did that help?

I went to grad school for philosophy. I know these statements can vary based on what you're studying. I'd suggest at least making it relate to your field -- maybe you can take an example of your dedication and focus and go from there? Maybe explain why you're choosing grad school over other options. Show yourself as a philosopher, economist, biologist, etc., whatever you are doing. My only advice is to make sure that whatever you show yourself putting aside doesn't make you seem too insensitive because you never know what values the person reading (evaluating) your statement holds.

Mine wasn't extremely personal and I don't think it necessarily has to be. I think it would be great to simply talk about what you said...how you have been able to put everything on the back burner to pursue certain things. Maybe discuss why you feel you are that way and how that makes you different/better than other applicants.

"My strength comes from my ability to put everything else in my life on the back burner and pursue things like school with intense dedication and professionalism."

How did you get to be that way?  What experiences in your life shaped those strengths?  Was it family or how you were raised?  Maybe it was a passion you pursued as a kid?  For example, I learned at an early age how to balance work and home and other interests because I loved competitive horseback riding.

Whatever your reasons are, right about those.  Be sure to use some examples.  You will do great.

Oh wow. I totally forgot about  posting last night. I wasn't all with it last night as I was obsessing over a million little things!

Thanks for your input, I appreciate it! I guess the hard part for me is I don't want to write about the negative experiences in my life that had those positive impacts on my character development. Unfortunately I haven't had a lot of other things...I had a hard time until I went off to college and was able to take care of myself. And now I never went on cool internships abroad or could really afford to do one here. I've always had to work (you know so I can eat and be sheltered) and its always been important to me to have time for family and so on. But I'm a really good student and have poured all of me into my studies.

I don't know what I'm going to do...I think I need to do some more brainstorming.

@bamboo, if you want, PM me your email address and I'll email you my STatement of Purpose for Grad School. I got in, so I can't imagine I messed up that much and it may or may not be relevant to you....

I wrote about something I was passionate about and how it tied into what I wanted to do. I was applying to law school so I wrote about how I think that most of america's biggest problems (drugs, crime, violence, poverty, etc) could be improved if we reallocated funds to elementary education and made it a national priority to ensure EVERY child got a good education. I then wrote that I wanted to get my law degree and work for an education nonprofit lobbying washington.

Okay so I am feeling a lot better after you ladies chimed in and EJS helped me out here. This is what I was thinking of in terms of level of personal detail, but all the online ones were like WAY WAY out there types of personal. I'm still nervous, but I mean who isn't when applying to grad school.

Bamboo - mine was super personal, but that's because it's what drove me to grad school and ultimately what field i'm working in right now. I think there's a way you could tell a personal story to make it both compelling and professional. Good luck!
