I live in a duplex. My husband and I are on 1 side and the landlord’s brother and his family are on the other side. Over the past couple of months, we have noticed a stale cigarette smoke smell coming from that side of the house. At first we could only smell it in our laundry room, so we shut the door and it was fine. Recently though we have been able to smell it in other parts of the house – including our hallway and living areas. This is just gross – both my husband and I are non-smokers and it really bothers us. It is only certain times of the day, but it is in the late afternoon and evenings (when we are home) that it is the worst.
Our neighbors have always been smokers and we have lived here for 1 1/2 years and this has never been a problem. Our thought is that they are smoking in their basement and the smell is drifting through some opening where our laundry room and water heater is.
I looked through the lease and there is nothing in there about smoking. I know the previous tenant who lived on our side for 7 years did not smoke.
My question is who do I say something to? We get along fine with our neighbors (say hi and small talk when we are outside) but I would feel awkward bringing up the situation to them. Should I say something to the landlord (who is our neighbor’s brother)? I feel like he should deal with it, but it will also create an “elephant in the room” the next time we see our neigbors.
