I think the general is 4-6 months prior. Some people go as early as 8 months.
Usually 6-9 months before the wedding. If you think they will help, you can send them closer to the date, but less than four months and you should probably just wait for the invitations.
We're having a destination wedding and want to give our guests a TON of notice so that anyone who would like to come so they can arrange it, so we're sending out STD's out 11-12 months before hand.... hopefully with our x-mas cards this year
6-9 months depending on how many guests are traveling. You want to send out your invitations like 6-9 weeks before hand.
