We registered 7 months ahead at Crate Barrel and that was a bad choice :( We kept having things get discontinued as the seasons change. They didn't email us with warnings so I kept having to check to see if things were now unavailable. We ended up having to pick all new glassware and silverware. They sold out of the lids that we registered for but someone had already bought the pots. So we had to then exchange things.

After we asked C&B  and they recommend 4 months prior to shower, if you're having one.

@cherrycoke: we have the same wedding date, & FI & i already registered=) we stuck with things that weren't going to be discontinued or go in or out of season- like our dishes, kitchen items etc. i think places like crate & barrel, pottery barn, and target change their stock more often than places like bed bath & beyond or amazon (we registered at bb&b & amazon). i fig it's one less thing to do later and right now, i had time to research products to make sure we were registering for well reviewed items.

Depends on what people buy you presents for.  We had family members buy us stuff purely for getting engaged (we got engaged in Aug and getting married in April so not that long) so we did it in Sept... but we had to watch of for discontinued stuff.

I think it partly depends on your family and when you wil need it. you may not need it till your shower in which case maybe 2 months prior to that?
