We DIY'd our invites but we started looking at them as soon as we started planning. We had a year long engagement. We had them chosen at 11 months out.
I'm six months out from my wedding and I am finalizing the design for our letterpress printer. I am ordering envelopes today. We are partially DIY. It will be time consuming.
I had planned on looking around christmas time/early january for my July 2011 wedding. But when my friend came to visit this past weekend to help work on wedding plans we found a great deal a Michaels. We were at Michaels getting materials to do a mock up of the centerpiece and program wedding fan and found that Brides wedding invitation were on buy one get on free plus we had a coupon. So I ended up buying the invitations (I have to print myself) and getting 200 invitations for $84.00 :-) :-) !
We are DIY ing our invitations. We started designing as soon as we got engaged (2 year engagement) and took our time. Here is our timeline:
12 mos. out: Ordered all the paper/supplies
10 mos. out: Finalized the Design Suite (you really cannot do this until you have ALL the details in place like time/place/hotel info, etc)
8 mos. out: Printed everything
6 mos. out: Put everything together (tape, glue, decorate)
6 - 3 mos out: Address all the envelopes (over the holidays) and buy postage (waiting for 2011 increase)
3 mos. out: Mail them out!
