I think the fishing line is used more for its’ invisibility than its’ strength.
Twine would certainly be strong enough to hold a paper lantern.
I prefer the invisible look.

@BruderLove: Twine will totally be fine for those lanterns! The only tricky thing with twine is that you have to make solid knots, otherwise they have a tendency to unknot. As long as you have a solid knot, you should be fine.
