How to avoid bees/wasps (the insects)?

I have a confession to make. I have a SEVERE phobia of bees and wasps. The first few times I visited Weddingbee I actually caught myself flinching a bit at the little cartoon bee on the website banner... So I take precautions whenever I'm outdoors to avoid attracting the little buzzing devils -- I don't wear perfume, or hair spray/gel, I'm always on the lookout if I see anything flying around me, etc. I actually look forward to winter every year simply because I know there will be no buzzing stingers flying around (the only reason I like winter, because otherwise it's my least favorite season because I'm always cold).

And here's the problem. My wedding ceremony will be outdoors. And although there won't be any flower decorations at the ceremony, I will be carrying a bouquet of roses and there will be various other people around me carrying or wearing flowers (bridesmaids, groomsmen, flower girls, etc). The flower centerpieces at the reception will be fine because that's going to be indoors. The wedding is in February but it's in Puerto Rico where "winter" usually means "if it's 60 degrees, that's as cold as it will ever get" so I don't think bees/wasps go away during the winter months there... Not sure though, since the last time I was in PR in February was at least seven or eight years ago, so I can't remember...

Short of asking the venue (Arecibo Observatory) to fumigate for bees/wasps or something extreme like that, I have no idea what I can do to avoid said insects from terrorizing me during the ceremony if they're around (I swear, they can SMELL MY FEAR, seriously). Is there any way to make bees/wasps go away? Repellants? Distractions? Anything? Does anyone know? This is a worry I've had in my mind ever since we decided on the ceremony venue (maybe I shouldn't have scheduled an outdoors ceremony, or maybe I should have gotten fake flowers for the bouquets, but well, shoulda coulda woulda, can't do anything about that now), and I tried to ignore it for the longest time, but now that the wedding seems to be very rapidly approaching (four months!), it keeps coming back to the front of my mind and makes me freak out a little every time I think about it...

Is it ok if I comment on this post... or is there too much Bee in my username? :-)

LOL! I've gotten used to the cute cartoon bees here by now -- as well as the bee-themed posting levels ;) so of course it's ok!

Hmmm... Have you checked at your venue whether there are frequently bees? Is it in a garden? I'm sure if you bring up the matter with the venue they might have some solution. I'm sure bugs (not just bees) are a common problem with outdoor weddings so I assume there must be some procedures that they usually follow.

I'm not entirely sure if they have frequent bees/wasps. The last time I was there, I saw a bunch in a trash can, which I guess I can ask them to move somewhere else for the duration of the ceremony. Fiance and I will be in PR next weekend for our e-pics and various meetings with vendors, so I'm thinking of swinging by the observatory and asking about the insect situation... I am just extremely paranoid about the possibility of bees/wasps there for the ceremony when I'll be carrying flowers. I'll be nervous enough with all those people looking at me, and the thought of bees/wasps will make me even more nervous :-[

There's no garden nearby, but the ceremony location (the deck of the visitor's center) is surrounded by a lot of nature. Here's some images (hope the links work):

The view from the deck (that's fiance in there scratching the back of his neck; this is where we'll be standing during the ceremony):

Looking in the other direction from where I took the previous photo (this is where there will be chairs for the guests; the bee-infested trashcan from my last visit was off to the right side of this field of view, at a significant distance from where I was standing):

The funny thing is that I hadn't even thought about any other insects until you pointed it out, Lizaan! Mosquitos? What are those? :P  And now that I think about it, mosquitos are probably more abundant... but much MUCH less scary! :o

Hmmm... looking at the area, it seems like there aren't very many flowers or possibilities for bees. Very interesting venue, BTW! Love it!
