Our living room is so dark in my opinion and I really want to brighten it up. I feel the reason for it being so dark is because we have one red wall that just seems to make it so dim. We will eventually paint the wall once we buy the house but for now we are renting so I need more ideas to brighten up the room. I'd prefer to have a limited source of lighting (i.e. different kinds of lighting rather than more lighting). We have a dome fixture on our ceiling fan so possibly a different fixture that lets more light into the room? Any ideas?

What type of window treatments do you have in the room? Could you lighten up on those?

I would also add some mirrors and definitely change the light fixture. I think dome lights (I call them boob lights) are really unattractive anyways. Would you open to the idea of having a cute floor lamp with a drum shade?

Also, what kind of flooring do you have? Dark carpet never realy goes well with dark walls, so maybe add a light colored throw rug or area rug.  Light drapery (tan or cream) would lighten the room as wel.

In my last place we had no overhead lighting so we put a variety of lamps in the room and it worked really well. We had two floor lamps in different styles placed strategically in the darkest spots, then table lamps in different spots that needed more light. We also got one of those huge framed mirrors that lean against the wall and that made such a difference.

If you're willing to remove the ceiling fan, you can replace it with a large chandelier or pendant light that will be a lot brighter.

I will definately look into getting a new light fixture for the ceiling fan. I hadn't really thought about the blinds but now that you mention it, it is a brown blind rather than white so that will have to be replaced! I also really like the idea of strategically placed lamps!! These are all great ideas ladies!

    thanks so much!
