I second the medicated shampoos. FH gets really dry scalp, and shampooing with a  T-Gel shampoo once or twice a week is the only thing that helps.

@springbride23:  You’re welcome.  Yes, definitely bring it up!  I have fared better with my prescription treatments than with over the counter.  Good luck.  Smile

@springbride23:  Dye it.  I have the toughest time with dandruff and pretty no medicated shampoos work for me.  When I started dying my hair with demi-permanent dye I noticed that the chemicals kind of burned away my dandruff and it keeps me in check for the week or two after dying it.  Now I dye my hair every 4-6 weeks and the dandruff issue is so much better!  Plus, my hair looks healthier since I use a demi-permanent.

I second the visit-a-doctor advice.  I have pretty significant dandruff when I use regular shampoo, but Head & Shoulders keeps it completely under control.  You might have a skin condition that requires additional treatment, or you might even have an unrecognized food allergy causing your issues.

It’s a shampoo formulation that contains coal tar. I think Neutrogena actually has the copyright on the “T/Gel” name, but most drug stores also have a generic version.

@springbride23:  Then I suggest one of two other routes which have worked for me in the past: 1) only wash your hair every 2nd day or more unless it’s visibly greasy (PP is right about washing your hair too much causing flakes); and 2) ask your dermatologist to test your scalp for fungus which can also cause flakes and is easily treatable with a lotion you have to leave on your scalp a few hours each week.

Try the stronger stuff. Head and Shoulders makes a great clinical strength that helps with my dermatitis.
