I personally think I would tear down the wood paneling and put up dry wall. Painted paneling never looks quiet right to me. I would also tear up that carpet and put something different.

I agree- take down the paneling, it’s dated.

@confusedbridehere:  Honestly I think painted paneling looks fine! Here are some examples! Much more economical to work with what you’ve got.

And definitely get rid of the greenish carpet for a nice lightish neutral or even a wood/laminate with a great area rug.

The other thing that I would really try to fix would be the ceiling…it just reminds me of a school or office building. I’m not entirely sure how to go about that, but maybe another bee would have an example.

And built ins! Like this…(if you’ve got someone handy you could do something similar with bookcases and cabinets)

@confusedbridehere:  It’s not super expensive to drywall, but if you don’t know how to do it yourself then it can be expensive to hire someone. Around here, 4×8 sheets of drywall are about $8 a piece, so it adds up when you do a large room but as far as remodeling goes, that’s not too bad of a price. You also have to buy the mud and tape, but a box of mud goes a long way. If you were to bother with drywall at all, you should definitely redo the ceiling with drywall at the same time. But anyway, if I were you I would do the carpet first, and if you can’t afford drywall just paint the panels until you can afford to remodel. As for decorating…I’m not all that good at that, so I’ll leave that to the other bees lol!
