You need to have the license from the place where you are getting married and the pastor will have to file in that county for it to be legally binding.

What county in MN?  The rules are different for every state & every county.  For example, in Dane county, there is a waiting period UNLESS you’re both coming from out of state, in which case, it gets waived for $25.

Most states have exceptions for DWs.

It doesn’t matter where your pastor is from, being ordained is a nationally recognize certificate, not by state.  You will have to have your license filed in the county you are getting married in.  Then you can transfer it to your home state (that’s usually very easy).  Try looking it up under the government website for where you are getting married and will be living.  Sometimes the forms are on there too, if you want to get a head start.  Don’t forget to get extra copies!

@engleman10513:

If you file for your marriage license in Hennepin or Ramsey county they are good anywhere in the state.  There is a 5 day waiting period and you have to do it in person.  The license is good for 6 months.  The only thing I am not sure of is the officiant question.

Having the license recorded has to be done in person and with an originally signed form.  I know it costs, but I’m sure it varies by county.

well the actual legal license (at least here in canada) you get that from a govt registry…like where you go to renew your car registry or get your drivers license done…and it has to be from the place your getting married in! You and your hubby have to be present and produce valid govt issued ID in person…..so you might need to take a trip there to get it depending how long they take if its not instant, so def check on that!

Here we have to go and apply for it no earlier then 30 days before the wedding because it’s only valid for 30 days.

I dont know what the laws are in the US if the pastor is from a diff state, but Im assuming he should be able to do it legally …however I always here on movies: “by the power vested in me by the state of new york…” lol …but maybe it is nationwide

Also, call the # listed on the website that I posted, not just the main county #.
