So I’m sitting at my desk with extreme pain in my lower abdomen. I’m 99% sure it’s another cyst on my ovaries (I’ve had 4 over the past 4 years) I’ve seen my doctor about it, but it’s been 2 years since I’ve had one. Every time, they’ve just gone away on their own after a day or two. My question is, what do I say to my boss? I don’t want to freak him out with “woman stuff” but I don’t know what else to say. I don’t want to just say “my stomach hurts, I’m gonna go home.” But right now, I want a pain pill and hot water bottle so bad 🙁 How would you word this? I’m his only employee so there’s no woman I can talk to about it.

@swanks4tw: I think just saying that you are in pain, and need to go home may be sufficient?

Legally, you do not have to tell him exactly what is going on. You may need a doctor note though. Personally, I would say that you have had some reoccuring health issues in the past few years and that you might be having a flare up and need some time away from work to get better.

I would just say you have an upset stomach and leave it at that. Go home and do what you gotta do so you can come back to work tomorrow, although you may want to go see a doctor, just to be on the safe side.

You are not required to share your medical information with your emoloyer. However, sometimes it does help an employer to know what’s going on with you.
Having a cyst on your ovary is not anything that you need to keep quiet or confidential. It does not reflect poorly on you in any way.
“I am sorry, but I have to go home. I have a cyst on my ovary and my pain is 8/10 right now. I will keep you updated about my return to work.”

Ok, thanks so much guys! I just don’t know if it’s weird to talk to my boss about my ovaries. I will just tell him that I’m having intense stomach pain and if he asks further I will explain it. I think he’ll be cool with it. I just didn’t want to sound too vague like I just want to go home.

@swanks4tw: I’m glad we could help. And with that, I really hope some time away from work will help and that you get feeling better soon.

I wouldn’t lie, I would go with what red dino suggested.

I would say you are having some abdominal pain (could ve stomach, could be lady parts) and you need to go home.
Hope you feel better!
