How to find a good band?

I'm really lost about how to find a band for our wedding...I'm having trouble with just random Googling but can't figure out how to find someone otherwise...Any ideas/suggestions? How did you find your wedding entertainment?

I would try Yelp. It's been really helpful in finding everything from a DJ to the best eats. They have reviews from locals which really helps.

I wouldn't really suggest Craigslist because you never know if they're good or not.

I know that here in San Diego we have Channel 10's A List which has a list of all the best wedding photographers, DJ's. I wonder if NY has something similar?!?

I used craigslist and got a LOT of responses. Then I went to see some live - and I'm very glad I did because the leader of a band we were seriously considering turned out to be a major alcoholic. He sounded good on the (edited) mp3's I heard, but sounded pretty bad live. Plus, I'd worry about him doing something embarrassing all night long.

Or if you see a live band and like their stuff, just go up and ask them if they do private parties.

Have you checked for reviews on your local Knot board? Or reviews on any of the other sites like WeddingWire?

Hi,

It's very difficult to find a good band, so many of them have a day job and do 'gigs' on the side but are not really professional.

My sister got married in April and booked a band after she them performing in another wedding. The band is composed top musicians and a very talented vocalist who happen to be performing in differents venues in NYC (Metropolitan Room, Iridium etc...).
