I'm just a plain and simple girl but personally i would just leave the doors open, have a carpet or rug between spaces, or maybe even flowers or something outside to draw the attention of the guests. Sorry if this doesnt help :) it is pretty late ...haha
Maybe you could have your venue set up an extra (but smaller) bar or drink station outside? I was in a wedding with a similar sort of set up, and having the extra bar outside helped people realize it was part of the reception/cocktail hour. Of course, just leaving the doors open and letting a few key people know beforehand so they can spread the word always helps!
oh i think thats a great idea...we're also thinking of changing the set up a bit...usually they set the head table sort of in front of those doors and i feel like that will make it seem blocked off a bit so maybe moving that somewhere else may help too...drink station for sure though thanks!
Totall agree with guinness. Bars send people running! =) Since it's early, what about a bloody mary bar or a mimosa bar?
its a dry wedding..but maybe we can have a juice bar or something...maybe we'll think up some specialty drinks...i wonder if they charge for that though...
turn on the fire alarm?
haha. Sorry just being a nut - honestly, leave the door open I'm sure some people are smokers and will wander outside at sometime and others will follow to simply enjoy the day.
We had a similar kind of venue which had a patio we could use. We just left one of the doors open and our guests wandered out there on their own.
If you want, you could put a few small floral centerpieces on the tables outside to tie in the wedding decor.
thanks ladies...i realize now that i'm becoming a bit meticulous with the planning and that things will happen naturally...
thanks for all the advice! :)

so we're getting married at a golf course this august...ceremony at 10am on the outdoor patio, cocktail hr and reception immediately following inside the clubhouse...i just found out that we can also continue to use the patio space during the reception which i think is great! but now i'm wondering how to get people outside to use the space when everything will be set up inside and without spending a fortune on patio furniture...our venue said they would leave some chairs and keep their normal chair, table, umbrella set up out there...and there will also be a speaker out there so that the music can be heard...here's a pic of the venue, any ideas are greatly appreciate!
this is the view of the inside
and this is the patio area (pre-ceremony):
