@AnonymousCupcake:  The promise of an awesome housewarming party once you’re settled.

Make the promise of pizza and beer very very obvious! And phrase it as though whatever help they can offer is welcomed, sometimes friends will back out because they don’t think they can do heavy lifting/can’t stay for the whole event, but they can still help out in other ways.

Definitely feed them after they help.  If you think the offer of dinner and drinks isn’t enough to get your friends to help out maybe you could offer taking them out to a movie or something.

I have never helped a friend move or been helped; I’ve always hired a moving company and I just feel awkward asking people to help me in general.

But I think you could just ask them directly and sincerely? Tell them that you can’t do it alone and would really appreciate their help. “Paying” them in food and drink is a great way to make it a fun time but honestly, I’d never help a stranger move for free pizza/beer– if they do it it will be because they care about you <3

So I would just ask them genuinely and if they don’t want to I personally would be too shy to try to convince/persuade them.

It makes a big difference if they can be assured that you’ve packed up and moved the little things and are only imposing for the jobs that require the extra hands. I don’t mind some heavy lifting or carrying boxes to the truck, but I have better things to do than wrap your dishes and sort through the junk in your closet.

I always bribe with food. Depending on the person beer. But I have bribed quite a few guys in my day with food. It works wonders.

Food and drink is all it takes generally!!!  I’ve moved 3 times, and the promise of food, and beverages has always been all it took 🙂

@AnonymousCupcake:  Yeah. It’s irritating as all get out to be prepared for a few hours of hard work and instead be faced with an entire day of tedious tasks. Yet so many people set their friends up for that. I will never understand!

The way our friends have done it is just to say “hey, we’re moving on X date, we rented a truck, we would absolutely adore some help loading/unloading the boxes and big stuff.  We’ll start at X time, there will be donuts and coffee in the morning, and we’ll order pizza from that really awesome pizzeria and give you all the beer you can drink for lunch”.

Basically make it as easy for your help as possible, and make sure they KNOW you’re making it easy.
