Ok so we're typically "get what you pay for" kind of people, whereas my parents are "get everything you can!" and typically, I'm not real comfortable asking for free stuff. However, at the hotel we're going on vacation, we paid for the most basic of rooms and since it's DH's birthday in a couple weeks, I thought maybe we'd see if we could get an oceanview or a room not in the boonies.

How do you do this? Besides the, "hey do you have anything nicer?" and waving a $20 bill at the lobby counter. I feel like that's a tacky way to go about it.

I don't want to be rude or pushy about it...I'm just not a person who's comfortable asking 'favors', even though I know they just work there and probably don't care.

    Advice? Thx =]

I always am the one who checks in, while the boy waits in the lobby in shame, since I alwyas slip in "we're on our honeymoon!!" even though we aren't even married yet.  Its always worked! :)

When we want to cancun, we booked a room that did not have an oceanview. upon check in, my fiance descretely showed a 20 dollar bill to the lady helping us at the front counter and there just so happened to be an ocean view room available on a higher floor....score!

We've tried the honeymoon card before and they always say "oh so are so many other people!" plus we didn't have our travel agent write in honeymoon, just "birthday" so i think it'd be weird if we brought it up suddenly...

@alishadshs4, lol, i always feel like that's such a weird way to do it! I'm sure that's just 'how it's done' sometimes though.

Like tipping the bartenders=extra strong drinks!

I felt weird too thats why i had my fiance do it! He is very good at things like that so I usually put him in charge. He is a smooth talker and is very polite, me on the other hand can get very rude if i am unhappy! So i just stood back and let him do his thing and it worked! And yes tipping the bartenders good does result in extra strong drinks and great service; that is the experience we had in Cancun.

Those workers there are very poor and they will take whatever you give them so you have to think of it that you are doing a service for them also. They love the American dollar

I've worked in hotels for the last 5 years, and we've probably heard it all.  The best thing to do is be polite, and ask nicely.  A simple - "We're here to celebrate my fiance's birthday and wanted to see if you had any complimentary upgrades available" is the best way to go about it.  Or, if you know they have an upgrade available, ask if they could upgrade you for a small fee?

@pvaulter...its probably a little different in the US than it is in Mexico...they really need the money down there...not to say that Americans arent poor and dont need money but i think the morals and mentality are a bit different.

@alishads4-- that is EXACTLY why I don't want to go to a third world country for our honeymoon! lol

I was doing some research on a honeymoon in Hawaii and then another resort in Jamaica...both resorts recommended bringing your marriage certificate with you to prove you're on your honeymoon because too many people have been dropping the "we're on our honeymoon" card and it isn't really true...so, just a thought.  I know Couples in Jamaica, where we are considering for our honeymoon, you have to prove you've been married within 30 days to receive any kind of special honeymoon treatment.

I think getting a good upgrade also depends on what type of resort you go to.  I read on Couples message board that very rarely is a upgrade given because of the nature of the resort.  It's the type of resort that seems to caters to honeymooners and people celebrating anniversaries, so when you say "Hey, I'm on my honeymoon" hoping to score a good upgrade, I'm sure they're thinking, "Yeah?  No Shiz...so is everyone else here at the resort." LOL  But, I think you said you are going to Mexico...maybe it's a resort that caters more towards vacationers and not honeymooners?  If that is so, I'd just be upfront and ask.  I'm like you, I don't think I'd be too comfortable flashing a $20 to get it...just seems a bit awkward to me.

We're going to a non-honeymoon type hotel. It's the Ocean Coral & Turquesa resort (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g240327-d1128762-Reviews-Ocean_Coral_Turquesa-Puerto_Morelos_Yucatan_Peninsula.html) so, from the reviews, I think it just caters to families and vacationers in general. I didn't read anything about weddings or honeymoons really. Those people upgrade to the Privilege Package, which we aren't doing.

I will second what pvaulter718 said.  As someone who has spent some time at the front desk of a hotel, I think your best tactic is to be very nice and sweet and just ask.  Let the front desk clerk know that it is for a special occasion and that you were just HOPING there might be an upgrade available.  I would say unless the hotel is sold out, the front desk clerk can probably do something for you, provided they are in the right mood.

I'm still of the opinion that even in Mexico, it's not the most elegant thing to wave a $20 at the front desk clerk.

@ejs...Uhmm....first of all...I am so jealous!  I want to go. lol  In our two years together, DH and I have yet to take a "real" vacation together.  Whenever he is home on leave, I'm always working.  The only time we've had where we both had time off was the week of the wedding...sigh....I'm having serious vacation envy right now!

I think asking will definitely help.  Several years ago, I was planning a roadtrip to Astoria, OR (where Goonies was filmed...yeah, I'm "that" dorky) and found a really cute boutique hotel that I wanted to stay at, but it was like $350/night which was out of my budget.  I ended up finding the same hotel on Kayak (which was still very new at the time) for only $110/night, I kid you not.  I called up the hotel and told them I had found a better rate and surprisingly, they honored it.  That's my one story for scoring a sweet deal on a hotel room. lol

@JSDragonfly, TAX RETURN, lol. It was only $1900 for 5 days and we won't be able to go anywhere anytime soon b/c i'm going back to school and DH is starting a new job. We're only really able to go now that he's out of the Army! They make it so tough to travel, as I'm sure you know =]

Here's to hoping the clerk checking us in thinks i'm a hottie when I ask nicely, HAHA!

As my mom says, - most of the time "Manners will get you everywhere."  I always ask super nice, offer to pay an upgrade fee, try a little "tipping" and - if you get 'tude back every step of the way - then it's full barrels absolutely.  ;)

Holy canoli...$1900 rocks!  Yeah, I've pretty much put off making plans for a belated honeymoon until DH is finally living with me next October. lol  I am learning that making travel plans when the Army is involved can be very damaging to my wallet. lol
