I use adobe illustrator for all of my designing. Its kind of expensive but you can download it and use it for free for thirty days. You can always use microsoft word as well.

If you have a good printer, use that. But if you don’t want to use your printer you can get them printed out on cardstock or whatever at kinkos. They will also cut your stuff down for you too. It isn’t too expensive.

I think you could also use Word in a horizontal format (if you want it to be something you fold) if you’re more familiar with it. Depending on the lenght you could even do two per page and just cut them in half.

I used Word and made text boxes so that I could move them around the page and make more then one column.

You will need to print a few test pages on your plain paper.  It was really easy once I figured out that the cover page text had to be on the right side of the page so that when you folded it, all was right.
