My guess is they drilled holes through the plates and then used rods that screw into each other for the support.

I googled for you, but I couldn’t find where to buy them other than ordering 500 from China. Maybe buy a cheap one at Value Village or Goodwill and take it apart?!

I think you could make it with three vintage-looking plates in three progressive sizes, and two metal rods.  It would be super cheapo and adorable.  I’m not sure where you’d get the metal rods from, but I bet if you walked around an Ikea for a few hours, you’d find something that would do just fine.  You could also spray paint a glass rod, short skinny vase or short candlestick to silver and use that as the connector.

We made our cake stand by gluing an Ikea bowl upside down under an Ikea platter:

I think you could do the same thing in your style by (1) taking the smallest plate and gluing a metal rod to the underside of the small plate; (2) glue up the other end of the metal rod, and attach it to the top of the medium plate; (3) glue a second metal rod to the underside of the medium plate; and (4) glue up the other end of the metal rod, and attach it to the top of the biggest plate.

We used any old epoxy.  It only took about 10 minutes to do, we just measured really carefully.

As you can see, it turns out pretty sturdy:

You just need daintier, prettier plates than we used and more layers.  But it’s really easy.

What about using candlestick holders in between? They would be slender, and you could use silver or crystal/glass.

@huckleberry: It is pretty easy. You just need a drill bit designed for glass/ceramic (and then don’t press too hard). Or use a handheld tile saw, but without lots of practice that might break the plate.
