Someone in the ceremony forum has a venue with a gorgeous staircase. I’ve seen brides enter the reception hall this way and it is a lovely look.
So I posted the below to teach her how to walk down the step without stumbling. I’m posting it here because coming down stairs in a graceful way is a lovely way to join your FI or DH on any occasion – even at the movies or in a dept store. You can keep your eyes on his happy face almost the entire way down the stairs.
Here is a dancer’s trick for going down stairs without looking down at all –
Stand a few inches from the edge of the first step.
Standing and walking in a slight turn out will give you more stability.
Put your hand lightly on the rail. It looks prettier if you don’t grip. You can instantly grab the rail if necessary.
Slide the ball of your foot straight ahead until your foot finds the step and then finds air.
Then tap the outside middle part of your shoe on the step edge so you know exactly where it is.
Continue to move forward and step down.
This a heck of a lot easier than it sounds. It just takes lots of words to explain. Practice at work, dept stores, move theatres, etc, so you get it down cold.
As the others said, practice a few times in your heels during the rehearsal.
I don’t dance ballet any longer (knees are toast) but I still walk down stairs this way unless they are icy/slippery. It’s such a pretty look.
