Compared to a street size, how far out of wack was your gown?

Mine is within a size (street 12ish, gown 14)

However, just ordered my BM's dresses, and holy crap, my one BM is a size 18!  She wears a size 12 usually!!  We've double checked the measurements, and they are right, but due to her waist, she needs an 18!  I am in shock at how weird they are sized!

    I'm a street size 2 and I bought a gown size 8 (but it was a sample...I would have ordered a 6).

Yeah, I was surprised when I ordered my dress. I am a street size 4, and had to order an 8.

I'm usually a 2, and I ordered a 6 and it fits me perfectly. The consultant wanted me to order a 10 though -_-

I was a bridesmaid in a wedding and I was a street size 8 but the dress I ordered ended up being a 4! I know usually wedding and bridesmaids dresses are ordered larger but for some reason that particular dress ran so so big! I haven't worn a 4 since I was in like early high school years! I really don't understand why the sizing is so over the place for bridal attire!

I was reading this article recently that talks about how some clothing sizes are adapting to the 'growing' population and others arn't. It appears that most of the higher up clothing sizes are the ones staying with the origional sizes and the discounted lines are printing different sizes that make people feel better about them selves. It is a pretty intereting article.

and it does explaine why my dresses from the limited and anthropologie are a 4 and others are anywhere between 0 and a 6. I have a vintage dress that I love and fits me just as well as an anthro 4 but it is a size 12!

    http://news.discovery.com/human/alley-gunn-sizing-110928.html

that is a copy of the article if anyone is interested

I'm a street size 16, but my dress is a 22! Frigging big chest was 1/2 inch too big for the 20, which was already too big in the waist and hips. But my dress buttons all the way up the back :-S.

Actually most of the dresses I tried on were right in my normal dress size, size 18.

    That number is so depressing.

I am a size 12 and my dress is actually a size 12. I had heard about the sizes being smaller before I went dress shopping so I thought the 12 would be too small but it fit great.

I'm a street size 6 and I ordered a size 4 wedding dress.  American sizes are so skewed so I didn't put any stock into it.  It used to be that US sizes were two smaller than Europe/Australia (i.e. US size 8 was a UK size 12), but now American sizes are getting so big that despite still wearing a size 12 in the UK/Australia, I now wear a 4 or a 6 in the US.  Crazy.   I think wedding dresses are more in line with European sizes and remain somewhat constant, whilst American sizes are getting bigger and bigger.

Street sizes are the problem, not bridal.

I believe the chain bridal stores (David's, Angelo) have adopted vanity sizing.  The designers have kept with traditional, old school sizing.

@globalmargaret: Yep. I'm pretty sure Old Navy (well, Gap, Inc) has ruined the normal concept of sizes.

I always get annoyed when I hear the argument "Marilyn Monroe was a size 14!" Sizing was so different back in the day. Nowadays she'd be like a street size 6 or something. http://www.snopes.com/movies/actors/mmdress.asp

That said, David's Bridal IS really screwed up when it comes to sizing. They're like the Old Navy of the wedding world. I hate that 2 is their smallest size and I still SWIM in their dresses, and I'm really not all that tiny.

As for me, I had my dress made, so I just gave the designer my measurements and didn't bother with the street size vs real size thing.

**Disclaimer: I actually like Old Navy! I just hate that their sizing is so screwed up!

I wear anything from a 0-4, and my DB bridesmaid dresses have always been 2's and fit perfectly, but my DB wedding dress size 2 was like it was made for Barbie... :-/

@mink:  I agree about the problem being street sizes. I really don't mind having to buy something tht says 16 or 18 if that number is actually standardized across companies/designers AND they still carry that in ready-to-wear misses stores.

I can't even tell you my street size! Of my 4 fav dresses in my closet, all of which are fairly fitted, one is a 6, one is an 8 and two are 10's. No idea. My wedding dress was a 10 though.

I wish women's sizes would be like men's...but I found a graphic somewhere that showed that Old Navy even plays games with men's jeans sizes.  The waists are larger than the inches listed on the tags!

I wasn't too shocked: I'm a US size 4, also an Australian size 8, and a size L in Japan

Considering with our wedding dresses we're dealing with international designers, the numbers used denote whatever scale they're using: US sizes are not universal.

My dress was made to my measurements otherwise alterations would have had a hell of a time making it fit.

Bust was a bridal 14, while my waist was an 8 and my hips a 10. I'd say I'm a street size 6 but generally have to go up a size and take in the waist and hips.

I'm a street size 6/8 and my gown sizing was between 12/14.  I ordered a smaller size because the number scared me even though I should have gone larger, lol.

I took a size 4 in my dress and am a size 4 in my street clothes so not much disparity there.

I think it's pretty much guaranteed that if you go into the type of store that carries dresses in every size in stock (David's, Alfred Angelo, etc.) that the dresses are street-sized, and that higher end places, where the numbers really just reflect teh measurements they took, that the numbers will be truer to designer sizing.

My dress wasn't too bad - just one size bigger than my street size. Though I'm forever jealous of my friend who's wedding dress was one (or two - can't remember) sizes smaller than her street size.

I am a street size 0 and my Enzoani Blue dress was ordered in a 0. My bridesmaid dress for my friend's wedding from Dessy group fit perfectly when it came last week and it is a 00. Every line is different and you never know what size you will wear.

I'm a medium and usually a street size 8 but I when I tried on wedding dresses, I was anywhere from a 6 to a 14! It's crazy how much size variation there can be. I'd say overall I averaged a wedding dress size 10-12, and my Pronovias dress is a size 12. At David's I'm a 10 in their bridesmaid dresses (they measured me at a size 8 but I'm a DD bust). But anyways, there is a ton of size variation betweeen designers. I think overall it's true what I was told at most boutiques that bridal gowns run about two sizes smaller then your normal dress size.

I'm between a 4 and a 6 and my dress size fell right between a 4 and a 6 (it's Maggie Sottero if that makes a difference). I used to work at DB and they always told us their sizes ran large (most women got 1-2 sizes larger than their jeans).

Im getting a Maggie.. I typically wear an 8.. they are ordering a 14.. I had a 10 on in the store and was just a tadd off in the hips. A 12 would be fine... I fig with the exta materia a lil hand bag and a hankie could be made.
